Bernie Sanders Criticizes Disney
Bernie Sanders Totally Bashes Disneyland While Speaking Near the Theme Park
During a campaign speech near Disneyland yesterday, Bernie Sanders condemned the entertainment giant for its supposed unjust treatment of employees. This is not a new tactic for Sanders; the presidential candidate often slams behemoth corporations he claims benefit from a rigged economy. However, this particular censure hit literally close to home, as many in the Anaheim, CA, crowd were Disney employees.
The crowd cheered when Sanders asked if anybody worked for Disney — but when he asked if they made living wages from the corporation, they responded with a resounding "no." He went on to point out that Disney exemplifies the crux of the rigged economy:
"Here in Anaheim and the surrounding areas, Disney pays its workers wages that are so low that many of them are forced to live in motels because they can't afford a decent place to live. Meanwhile, Disney made a record-breaking profit of nearly $3 billion last quarter."
Sanders also dug into Disney for reportedly replacing 250 workers at Disney World with foreign workers who work for lower wages on H-1B visas. Disney responded to the accusations, saying that Sanders had it all wrong. Suzi Brown, a Disneyland spokesperson, told POLITICO:
"The Disneyland Resort generates more than $5.7 billion annually for the local economy, and as the area's largest employer has added more than 11,000 jobs over the last decade, a 65 percent increase. These numbers don't take into account our $1 billion expansion to add a Star Wars-themed land, which will create thousands of additional jobs across multiple sectors."
Despite the response, we're certain Sanders won't cease going after corporations like Disney any time soon.
