Following a heart attack, activist Erica Garner has reportedly been listed as brain dead. According to the New York Daily News, the doctors at the Woodhull Medical Center in Brooklyn have said there is no chance of recovery.
The 27-year-old activist is the daughter of Eric Garner. In 2014, Garner was killed in Staten Island by NYPD officers who put him into a chokehold while arresting him under the suspicion of selling single loose cigarettes. Garner repeatedly told the officers "I can't breathe" before he lost consciousness.
After a video of Garner's death went viral, activists gathered across the nation to protest police brutality. In Staten Island, Garner's daughter led a protest in response to the grand jury's decision to not indict the police officer responsible for his death. She soon became a prominent figure in the Black Lives Matter movement. Following the latest tragic news, activists and politicians have shared their support and kind words on Twitter.
Devastating to hear this news--Erica Garner has dedicated her life to fighting against police brutality and exposing the injustices that killed her father.

My heart goes out to Erica Garner's family. So much tragedy. I can't help but wonder how watching her father, with police crushing his neck, say "I can't breathe," and then her work battling the injustice that killed him, affected her health. For many, living isn't easy.

After giving birth in August, Garner suffered her first heart attack. On Dec. 24, Garner suffered another heart attack and slipped into a coma. "She's not gone, she's brain dead," her mother told the New York Daily News. "Physically she is still with us."
