Here's How Melissa McCarthy Ended Up Playing Sean Spicer on SNL

Melissa McCarthy was born to play Sean Spicer — at least that's what a head Saturday Night Live writer seems to think. Kent Sublette, who was named to the position in January, personally approached McCarthy to play the part, according to People magazine.

Sublette reportedly wrote the skit with McCarthy in mind, and she "immediately jumped on board," surprising viewers on the show that was hosted by Kristen Stewart. McCarthy's first performance was so popular that she returned for a second skit the following week to reprise the role. We wouldn't be surprised if the impersonation was recurring.

When asked about the skit by Extra's AJ Calloway, Spicer admitted to have watched McCarthy's performance. Apparently so many people contacted Spicer about the sketch, he thought "there was a national emergency or something really funny happening."

The press secretary also joked about McCarthy lampooning him for his obsession with gum. "I think Melissa McCarthy needs to slow down on the gum chewing," Spicer said. "Way too many pieces in there."
