You'll Never Guess What the Secret Service Just Requested to Protect Trump and His Kids

The cost of protecting President Donald Trump and his family just keeps rising. According to documents obtained by The Washington Post on March 22, the Secret Service has requested an additional $60 million in funds for the next fiscal year, 2018.

The Post's investigation revealed that the Secret Service will seek $26.8 million for protecting Trump's family and home in New York City's Trump Tower (where Melania and Trump's son Barron currently reside.) In addition to allocating funds for Trump's private homes, the department will also seek $33 million in travel costs. The request does not include how much it costs New York to pay for the additional police presence required around Trump Tower, but that figure has been estimated to be around $500,000 a day.

In 2017, the agency requested $734 million for operations; the Secret Service also protects foreign heads of states and other members of the administration.

While budget numbers comparing the total cost of protecting President Barack Obama to Trump are not public information, some of their bills are accessible. A conservative watchdog group that tracked Obama's travel costs estimated that the Secret Service spent an average of about $12.1 million a year for travel, or about $97 million over the eight years of his presidency.

Perhaps Trump will rescind his previous criticism of Obama's travel — but that seems unlikely.
