What Will Planned Parenthood Do If Defunded?

Planned Parenthood Is Going to "Fight Like Hell" After the GOP Promises to Defund It

Planned Parenthood said it's going to "fight like hell" against Paul Ryan's promise to defund Planned Parenthood as part of Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare. The nonprofit organization sent a series of powerful tweets following the news on Thursday, calling it a political move that would strip away critical health care like birth control and cancer screenings for people who face health disparities.

In a press release, Planned Parenthoood also said it had planned 300 events (like marches, rallies, and forums) across 47 states from January to March to fight against defunding. It created a new website called istandwithpp.org to help supporters send letters to Congress, volunteer for Planned Parenthood, and find events.

"Planned Parenthood health centers serve 2.5 million people a year, at least 60 percent of whom rely on federal programs for care, and in many areas, Planned Parenthood health centers are the only family planning option for those who rely on Medicaid or other safety-net programs," wrote the organization in the release.

Since the election, the group said it's seen a surge in support via volunteers and social media users. "Planned Parenthood health centers also saw a 900 percent increase in requests for appointments for birth control, and especially long-acting reversible contraceptives such as IUDs, in the week following the election," it wrote, "showing how many people both rely on Planned Parenthood for care, and how many are worried about losing their access to health care under the new administration."

Ahead, check out some of the most powerful Planned Parenthood tweets that show the organization's importance within the health community and how it's not going to stay quiet.
