The Devastating Bombing You Probably Didn't Hear About

On March 13, a massive car bombing rocked Ankara, Turkey. At least 34 people died and 125 were injured, according to CNN. Authorities said it was to early to discuss who was to blame, but they did call it a terror attack.

The reaction in the mainstream and social media hasn't been as strong as it has for other Western attacks, like the Paris shootings in November. There's no Facebook option to change your profile to have a filter of the Turkish flag. No iconic illustration honoring the victims. In a Facebook post that has since gone viral, a man named James Taylor — who says he's lived in Ankara for 18 months — pointed out the disparity.

"It is very easy to look at terror attacks that happen in London, in New York, in Paris and feel pain and sadness for those victims, so why is it not the same for Ankara?" he writes. "Is it because you just don't realise that Ankara is no different from any of these cities?"

We've seen this before — prior to the Paris attacks, there were suicide bombings that shattered Beirut and a mass shooting in Kenya that didn't get as much attention. The why don't we care as much? could be attributed to many reasons: we've visited Western countries, we can relate to them more, we've tuned out the violence happens in that "other" part of the world, countries like France are an important US ally. But that doesn't make them less deserving of our attention. Taylor is right to ask "You were Charlie, you were Paris. Will you be Ankara?"
