How 1 Mom Balances Family Fun and Self-Care

4 Ways This Mom Stays Present and Prioritizes Self-Care During the Summer

For Farah Pink, summer means slowing down. The Miami-based content creator is almost always on the go: when she's not snapping photos or drafting social media posts, she's spending time with her partner, her 1-year-old daughter, and her dog, Sunny.

"I honestly don't have much free time these days, but when I'm able to have some, I love to go out for walks and be surrounded by nature," Farah says. "The beach is my favorite place. A long nap on a beach chair sounds divine." She takes advantage of the warm (OK, hot) Florida summers to plan plenty of walks on the beach, bike rides through the city, and afternoons lounging at the pool. "Summer gives me the chance to slow down a bit and spend more time with the people I love," Farah says. "This summer, we're hoping to be able to take our first family vacation." Here's how Farah makes the most of her summer.

Staying Present

To really enjoy every moment of relaxation during the summer, Farah has to stay present. She really makes an effort to put down her phone and enjoy time with the people she loves — even though that means putting her work on the back-burner. "I'm a content creator so I usually snap a few pictures and videos when I arrive anywhere to post at a later time, but once that's out of the way, I always put my phone away and give whoever I'm with my undivided attention," she explains.

Indulging Her Cravings

Farah's ideal summer wouldn't be complete without indulging in some of her favorite warm-weather foods. If she's having friends and family over for a cookout, Farah might serve something light and fresh — think lemony chicken skewers with a veggie-studded orzo salad. When she's craving something sweet, she'll reach for a tangy yet creamy Naked Key Lime smoothie. "It's the perfect beverage to have on a hot afternoon or whenever I need a pick-me-up," Farah says.

Prioritizing Self-Care

During the summer, Farah makes a daily effort to take care of herself through simple acts like reapplying sunscreen to protect her skin and drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated. Farah also treats herself to a lymphatic-drainage massage once a month — it never fails to make her feel refreshed and reenergized. Staying active also helps Farah feel good in her body. "I make sure to go for a daily walk with my daughter and dog to help me stay active," she says. "My fitness routine at the moment consists of at-home workouts, Pilates classes, and long walks. I find walks way more interesting than a treadmill."

Setting Boundaries

It's all about setting boundaries — after all, if Farah never stepped away from her work, she wouldn't be able to make time for self-care. Her laid-back summer full of family time wouldn't be possible without it either. "It means taking a few minutes to myself whenever I need it in order to recharge my batteries," she explains. "It means saying no to invites or projects when I feel too tired to enjoy them. These are things that are a must for me now that I'm a mom."
