Whether You're a Kook or a Pogue, Here Are 9 Must-Dos For Your Next Outer Banks Vacation

Ever since Outer Banks dropped on Netflix, we haven't been able to stop thinking about the North Carolina beach destination. Even though the show was filmed in South Carolina, the real Outer Banks is just as beautiful and has been for years. The East Coast hot spot attracts tourists from all over the world every year, especially during summer. The barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina have miles and miles of beaches, more fresh seafood than you could imagine, and so many fun activities to get into. Ahead, we've flagged just a handful of places you have to check out next time you're in the Outer Banks, but the visitor's guide has even more things for you to see.

01

See the Lighthouses

The Outer Banks has a few lighthouses to check out. The Bodie Island Lighthouse just outside Nags Head might be the most frequented, but there are others to see as well. You can use them as a stunning photo backdrop and learn their history when you visit.

02

Eat at Miller's Waterfront

Miller's Waterfront in Nags Head will give you not just some amazing seafood but also gorgeous sunset views over the water while you eat. All along the Outer Banks are a huge variety of restaurants with the freshest seafood you can imagine, so take your pick, but make sure one meal is devoted to Miller's.

03

Fly Kites in Kitty Hawk

Your kite options vary in Kitty Hawk. You could go kite boarding or hang gliding, which are both very popular in Kitty Hawk, or you can simply fly kites in this popular Outer Banks town. You'll find people all over the beaches and green areas flying kites on breezy days, but if you're really adventurous, head out into the air yourself.

04

Get an Original Duck Donut

Duck Donuts can be found all over the East Coast now, but you have to get an original Duck Donut in Duck, NC, right in the Outer Banks. The shop has a large variety of doughnuts to choose from, so grab a box in the morning to start your day off right.

05

Ride a Banana Boat

The options for water activities in the Outer Banks are plentiful, but we highly recommend riding a banana boat on the water. Find one of the many companies that rents equipment and hosts boat rides and sign up with your group to go flying through the water.

06

Get Ice Cream at Big Buck's

You can't leave the Outer Banks without getting ice cream at Big Buck's. The Outer Banks favorite has three locations — in Manteo, Corolla, and Kitty Hawk, and the shops have been serving up homemade ice cream for decades.

07

Go Dolphin Watching

You should be able to see dolphins all around the Outer Banks so make sure you take the time to look for them and appreciate them. Some companies along the coast offer guided dolphin-watching tours, and it's a must-do for your next trip.

08

Enjoy the Beaches

The Outer Banks have a number of beautiful beaches that are perfect for just lounging and soaking up some sun. Grab your favorite book and some sunscreen and choose from Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Duck, and more.

09

Visit the Wright Brothers Memorial

Wilbur and Orville Wright completed their first powered flight outside Kitty Hawk, and there is a memorial to them and to flight in Kill Devil Hills. The memorial is high atop a hill and will also give you more info on the history of flight.
