Harry Potter Fans Are Donating Socks to "Free" Dobby and Now We're Crying

Few character deaths are as heartbreaking as those in the Harry Potter series, and one in particular stands out from the rest: the murder of Dobby the house-elf by Bellatrix Lestrange. Years later, it's impossible to read or watch the elf's death scene without tearing up — which is why fans began a tribute to the free house-elf that would make Hermione Granger proud.

While visiting Dobby's life-size prop at the Warner Bros. London Studio Tour, fans noted that the house-self — who longed for freedom after decades of indentured servitude, only to be freed when Harry Potter snuck a sock into Tom Riddle's diary — was trapped within a glass box. In honor of Dobby's quest for liberation, fans have begun leaving socks in attempt to "free" him.
