Russia's capital will host this year's global soccer championship, and Kayak predicts a huge surge in tourism as a result. David Solomito, Kayak travel expert and vice president, NA marketing, says there are so many other reasons to visit Moscow in addition to the tournament.

"The world-famous Red Square is in the center of everything, making it a great jumping-off place to start your trip and get acquainted with the city. The Kremlin is a sight to see, and there's plenty to do — make sure to give yourself at least half a day to explore the many churches and museums within."

Solomito also reminds US citizens that they need a visa to enter the country and recommends applying at least 60 days in advance to be on the safe side.

Some watch it for the sport, others for the commercials, and still others tune in for the cute players (hey, no judgment!). Regardless of why people watch, any city hosting the Super Bowl is bound to be a good time come the first weekend in February. Referred to as the "Mini Apple," downtown Minneapolis is brimming with rocking pubs and nightlife, giving visitors so many stellar options to catch the game. And if you're not keen on the sport, go on a shopping spree at the Mall of America, which is only 10 miles outside the city.

Houston, TX

Even though 2017 was an incredibly tough year for the city of Houston with Hurricane Harvey, its resilience, sporting prowess, and cultural activities easily make it a Kayak can't-miss in the new year.

"This was an EPIC sports year for Houston, which hosted the world's biggest football game and solidified its spot as the world's best baseball team. And in between the two events, we were amazed to see the city's resilience in facing the devastation from Hurricane Harvey — businesses reopened two weeks after the hurricane. If you visit, make sure to see firsthand why Houston earned the nickname 'Space City' by visiting The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, home of the NASA astronaut corps."

There's a long list of reasons this South African escape has been the go-to travel destination for royals over the years. With the exchange rate improving, Solomito believes we will see an uptick in travel to this cosmopolitan retreat in 2018.

"Cape Town has something for everyone: beaches, mountains, gardens, and even wine lands 45 minutes outside of the city. Its prime coastal location makes it easy to find a delicious seafood dinner that won't break the bank. And if you still aren't convinced, google Bo-Kaap, a neighborhood so colorful and vibrant, you're guaranteed to give your friends some serious FOMO."
