Coming Soon: A Longer Version of Coca-Cola's Controversial Ad

Here's something to challenge your faith in humanity: #SpeakAmerican was trending on Twitter during the Super Bowl as a reaction to Coca-Cola's multilingual commercial. To be fair, many people were moved by the ad, which featured "America the Beautiful" in seven language as scenes of America filled the screen. Perhaps a few patriotic tears were even shed thanks to Bud Light-fueled emotion. Yet conservative talk show hosts, amateur Twitter commentators, and vocal Facebook users reacted negatively. "Speak English or go home," one person wrote on Coke's Facebook page. And Glenn Beck gave his take on the diversity-promoting ad Monday: "It's in your face, and if you don't like it, if you're offended by it, you're a racist. If you do like it, you're for immigration. You're for progress. That's all this is: to divide people." He continued, "Every leader of the European Union that tried multiculturalism is now warning America and the rest of the world that tried multiculturalism doesn't work; you have to assimilate."

Well, they better get ready for more of this "dangerous" message. Coke is debuting a longer version of the commercial during the Winter Olympics opening ceremony on Friday. The company's North American president said in a statement, "'It's Beautiful' is exactly what Coca-Cola is all about: celebrating the diversity that makes this country great and the fact that anyone can thrive here and be happy. We hope the ad gets people talking and thinking about what it means to be proud to be American." And a version of the song will also be available on Spotify. Thankfully, it looks like those upset by the ad are in the minority. On its Facebook page, Coke shared pictures of the young American women who performed the song for the ad, and the responses were overwhelmingly positive. And let's not forget that despite English's dominance, there is no official language in America. So technically, they're speaking American!
