What a difference a year makes. Last year Matt Lauer was called glib by Tom Cruise and it made headlines everywhere. Now in reaction to the Paramount dumping Cruise news, Matt is actually defending Tom. He said,
“You know what, I have to say something. You talk about erratic behavior and things like that affecting the box-office and yes maybe he jumped on a couch, and I was in the middle of one of those episodes here on the Today show and maybe he speaks out about Scientology and some people don’t like that. But what about the stars who are in and out of rehab every week? Is that any worse? And yet you find movie companies still in business with them. So, this is all a strange world we live in.”
Good point Matt. On a side note, who knew Matty was so ripped?
Ben really is growing up and turning into quite the family guy. We told you to expect to hear more gushing from Ben about his life as a parent and husband now that he's making his big comeback. Well, here's more. He says that playing superman George Reeves in his upcoming movie Hollywoodland helped him realize what's important in his own life. Ben said this of Reeves:
"He was an iconic guy because of who he played but he died tragically. What he had was never enough. You need to learn there are far more things to make you happy, like a wonderful wife and child. I'm lucky I was able to see the hollowness of fame. Family's what really matters."

Usher debuted in Chicago this week and he's getting awesome reviews. We already spotted Penelope at the show supporting Usher and now we see him with Ashlee. He'll star in the show through October 1st... will Ashlee make her rumored appearance as Roxie Hart before this time? This picture of the two hanging out backstage seems to be further evidence that she's Broadway bound. Could she be looking for a long term commitment? Usher seems to think his new gig is a like a serious girlfriend. He said:
"Broadway is like a monogamous relationship," the R&B star, 27, told PEOPLE during a party to celebrate his debut as singing shyster lawyer Billy Flynn in the long-running revival of the musical. "Doing anything else, like acting in Hollywood – which is great – it's like a one-night stand. You do it and then you keep moving."
As for how she liked seeing her son making his Broadway bow, Usher's mom, Jonetta Patton, told PEOPLE: "I thought his performance was unbelievable. Absolutely incredible. I am so so, so happy."

Turns out LL was right... Paris really did hack her Blackberry. She and many, many other users had their SpoofCard account deleted for "misusing the service." But Paris' reps don't care because the poor thing suffered the most when her pictures and numbers were hacked and leaked on the Internet. Page Six reports:
"All of the people that were terminated were terminated because they had violated the terms and conditions of use," company lawyer Mark Del Bianco told The Post's Hasani Gittens. Del Bianco also confirmed Lohan was a victim of the calling cards that can "spoof" caller ID displays, making it easy to tap into certain voice-mail systems. Lohan's publicist, Leslie Sloane Zelnick, said all information has been handed over to Lohan's lawyers, adding, "All I know is that Lindsay's messages were getting changed and she couldn't figure out what was going on, and now we know why." Hilton's rep, Elliot Mintz, stressed SpoofCard did not necessarily link her to Lohan's electronic woes. "I can't think of a single person in America who has been more humiliated by people breaking into [mobile devices] than Paris Hilton," said Mintz, whose client was out of reach in Japan promoting her new album.
Hollywood is calling the breakup between Tom and Paramount studios the biggest divorce ever. Some blame the split on Tom's crazy behavior... like jumping on Oprah's couch, and some blame Viacom's chairman, Sumner Redstone, saying Tom was too rich for his cheap blood. Extra landed the first interview with Tom Cruise's producing partner, so now we have just a bit more info to add to the drama. Here's more:
In an interview over the phone, Paula Wagner told us that Redstone's remarks to Tom are, "Disgraceful… and the height of unprofessionalism."
Paula also said, "Negotiations ceased a week-and-a-half ago."
So what really caused the sudden rift? And has Tom secured a secret deal elsewhere?
"Extra" has confirmed the answer is yes. Paula told us that she and Tom have already lined up $100 million in financing to produce movies on their own.
In addition, Tom's departure will make Brad Pitt the new prince of the Paramount lot. Pitt has his own production company, Plan B, housed at Paramount and will now be the biggest star on the lot.
So what's next for Tom and his billion dollar bank account? Since setting up shop on the Paramount lot in 1992, Cruise has generated $3 billion dollars for the studio.
To put that astronomical amount in perspective, that revenue surpassed the gross domestic product of Fiji. "I guess I don't think about it like that," Cruise told us. "[But] when I hear it from you, it blows my mind."
