It's why you might be tempted to mist with abandon before a job interview, but know this: musky perfume is the beauty version of black leather — sexually evocative by nature, and therefore must be used with moderation in a professional setting. That doesn't mean you have to skip scent altogether, but you want to find a light and airy elixir that screams "self-assured," while also being mindful of your potential employer's olfactory experience.

"I read once that you shouldn't wear perfume to a job interview in case the person who is interviewing you finds it offensive, but I'm a big believer in standing out, and nothing leaves a lasting impression (literally) like a good scent. I do try to avoid the heavy florals or powdery scents when attending an important meeting, and instead opt for fragrances that are popular and universally loved. My go-tos have been Glossier You or Byredo Gypsy Water ($65). They're familiar enough that the interviewer won't find it repelling, but unique enough in that they smell different on every person.

"I'm a pretty ritualistic person, so for job interviews or other BFD-days, I always bust out the same perfume, and I have ever since watching Elle Woods spritz it on during the first few seconds of Legally Blonde.
