There are countless smoky eye tutorials out there — hell, even John Mayer has one — but there is one way of bringing the age-old look into 2019. Makeup artist and Artistic Director of Glamsquad Kelli Bartlett previously told POPSUGAR a simple way to update the look. "You can wear it saturated and sparkly or stained and see-through," Bartlett said. "The new smoky eye is imperfect and customized to create the ideal eye shape."

To create the look, Bartlett says to sweep an eye shadow stick across your lid toward the outer corner of your eyes and taper into triangular shapes. Then, using an eye shadow brush, smear the cream shadow in a "windshield-wiper motion." Add the finishing touch of volumizing mascara.

If you have no idea where to begin, we suggest the tools ahead.

Using a volumizing mascara as a finishing touch to your modern smoky eye makes it that much more sultry.
