Honey is good for plenty of things: sweetening your tea, soothing a sore throat, even making a good old-fashioned hair mask. Still, the term "honey lips" is probably not something you thought you'd hear anytime soon, right? Well, thanks to social media, you can now call it the latest makeup trend.

Honey lips sound almost exactly as you'd imagine — an effortlessly cool, yellow-green lip shade that looks like nectar and lends a mirror-like shine. It's also perfect for year-round wear. "Think of the beautiful rich color of honey, but also the transparency," MAC Cosmetics makeup artist Fatima Thomas tells POPSUGAR. "With this trend, your mouth takes on that glassy sheen and golden overlay."

Of course, there are numerous ways to incorporate honey lips into your makeup routine. Keep reading as Thomas explains exactly how to get the look at home.

How to Get Honey Lips at Home

The best part of the honey-lips trend? You can't really mess it up. "It's super low stakes," Thomas says. "The equation is really half your natural lip color, then a greenish-yellow shade. Combine the two, and you'll have the desired look."

As honey lips rise in popularity, people have found a way to make the trend their own. "Sometimes you can take a bit of eyeshadow and put a little in the center of the lip," Thomas says. "This technique definitely adds some dimension, but I actually like to spread it sheerly over the whole lip for some extra shine while making my lips look more full." For a more formal occasion (or just to make your mouth pop even more), Thomas recommends adding a neutral lip liner for a more structured, "in your face" effect.

Because makeup is subjective, every artist and enthusiast has their own unique methods to achieve a look. Thomas's favorite way is with MAC Cosmetics's Squirt Plumping Glass Stick ($24) in the shade Like Squirt. "It gives [the lips] this sort of yellow cellophane shine," she says. "It's very subtle, but it's undeniable." You can also tap Gisou's Honey Infused Lip Oil ($32) for an ultra-glossy effect that leans more on that traditionally yellow side.

As previously mentioned, depending on the look you're going for, you may require the use of your favorite lip liner. Ours are the Catrice Plumping Lip Liner ($4) in Polite Rebellion, Black Opal's Precision Lip Definer ($9) in Hyde Park, and the Lawless Forget The Filler Definer Lip Liner ($21) in Nude Honey. Then, for an everyday look, you can simply go in with the squirt balm or lip oil and leave it there, or top it with a gold eyeshadow like Fenty Beauty's Trophy Wife ($40) or Danessa Myricks's Twin Flames ($26) in the shade Olivine. Should you, too, fall on the extra end of the spectrum, top your lips with an ultra-shiny clear lip gloss like Kylie Cosmetics's Match My Energy ($16).
