Since moving to Los Angeles six months ago, I've become obsessed with "tweakments." I'm not sure if it's the salt air or the fact that everyone here just so "happens" to look like a 10, but Botox, filler, and other procedures have been on my mind more than ever before. I've been especially toying with the idea of getting lip filler, but I've been too scared to pull the trigger. So, when I started seeing celebrities like Erin Foster and Kyle Richards talk about the Ourself Lip Filler ($145), a lip plumping product touted as an alternative to injectables, even claiming they were "genuinely blown away by the results," according to the former, I was immediately curious to try it out.

If I'm being honest, figuring out how, exactly, the Ourself Lip Filler works was hard to wrap my head around, but here's the gist. Essentially, many skin-care products that we apply topically don't always work because the molecules are too big to penetrate beyond the first layer of skin, so Ourself created a patent-pending delivery system called "multiphase vesicles" to help the absorption of ingredients.

When I first learned about the science, my immediate thought was that it was too good to be true. However, because my mother would disown me if I ever got lip filler and because I'm still a tiny bit afraid of it, I decided to put the Ourself product to the test to see if it was worth the price tag.

About the Ourself Lip Filler

  • The Ourself Lip Filler is a treatment designed to plump the lips instantly and over time with continued use.
  • It includes ingredients like hyaluronic acid to hydrate, as well as a vitamin B3-derived lip color enhancer, which adds a natural tint to the lips.
  • The product is formulated without phthalates and parabens, and is cruelty and gluten-free.
  • It utilizes multiphase vesicle delivery technology which delivers various sizes of hyaluronic acid to lips.

What I Like About the Ourself Lip Filler

First and foremost: this product works. I've been using it for a few months, and although I don't personally notice that my lips have become bigger, I was sold when, after I had been using it for a month, I went to dinner with my co-worker and she asked me if I got filler.

The plumping effect is immediate and lasts for hours, unlike other formulas I've tried that fade after a few minutes. Plus, the end result looks natural. I've tested quite a few different lip-plumping products, and while I do like some of them, the glossy and shiny effect is more suited for a "going out" look versus something I can wear every day .

I also have discoloration on my lips from sun damage (wear your lip sunscreen, people), and this product helps even out the color better than any other lip tint I've tried.

How to Use the Ourself Lip Filler

The product comes in packaging similar to a pen with a refillable cartridge that can be switched out once it's empty. You press a button on the pen, the liquid pops out, and you spread it over your lips. The brand recommends applying five layers of the formula in the morning and at night for the first five days in order to "jumpstart" your results. The brand says that applying it this way "rapidly accelerates" the results. After the first five days, they suggest applying one layer at least three times a day.

I started out using the product exactly as directed. After applying a layer, I let it dry, and then continued until I was finished applying five layers. The process was time-consuming, and not something I'd care to repeat because I found that applying five layers left my lips feeling a little goopy and heavy. Things got a lot better once I switched over to applying one layer three times a day.

Also, after some trial and error, I learned that I needed to keep the formula on my lips and not outside of the natural lip line — if I got any of the product outside my lip line, it plumped up that area as well and made it look red and irritated.

What to Consider Before Trying the Ourself Lip Filler

Something to consider before purchasing this product is that you'll need to be committed to using it consistently and as directed in order to see results. If you aren't prepared for that, I'd consider trying out a different product that offers a quick but short-lived plump. However, the time commitment is worth it if you want to see lasting results.

Also, if you like your lip products to have a glossy finish, know that this isn't that. That said, the brand recommends following up the treatment with its Lip Conditioner, which you can buy as part of the Lip Plumping and Enhancing Regimen ($190), or on its own for $45.

Is the Ourself Lip Filler Worth the Splurge?

Priced at $145, this product is not cheap. The $145 gets you the pen and one cartridge, and a refill of two cartridges is $125. However, compared to the price of actual lip fillers (and the potential side effects of lip fillers), in my opinion, this product is well worth it.
