Apply a Bold Lipstick That Lasts For Hours

The celebrity: Lupita Nyong'o, SAG Awards 2015

The hack: Bold lipstick that doesn't smear

The pro tip: A bright red lip can look glamorous coming down the red carpet, but it never lasts IRL. Makeup artist Nick Barose has a three-step approach to making any standout lipstick hue stay in place.

DIY it now: Prep the area around the lips with Lancome Effacernes Waterproof Concealer ($31). Barose used a Beautyblender ($20) for the most sheer application. Next you want to put on the lipstick directly from the tube for the most color payoff. Lupita's exact shade was Lancome lipstick in Rouge Caprice ($30). Only use the lip brush to get hard-to-reach crevices like the inner corners. Complete the lip with a coordinating pencil on top. Barose applied Lancome Lip Crayon in Garnet ($25) on the cupid's bow and outer corners.

Bonus: Swipe on a moisturizing product like Kiehl's lip balm ($9) to lips first to smooth any dry patches. Then wipe away the excess just before applying lip color.

Create a Flush With Blush Layers . . . and Your Palms!

Create a Flush With Blush Layers . . . and Your Palms!

The celebrity: Reese Witherspoon

The hack: Layer blush and then seal it in with your hands

The pro tip: "There is dimension to our real faces," explained Molly Stern for Laura Mercier. "I'm big on using multiple colors for things, because we have a lot of different colors [in our complexions]."

DIY it now: To fake Reese's gorgeous bone structure, take a deeper blush, such as Laura Mercier Blaze ($25), and put that all over the apples of the cheeks, blending it into the hollows every so slightly. Then layer a brighter color, like Laura Mercier Sunrise ($25), right at the apples. "That way you are getting depth from deeper color and pop from brighter color," said Stern.

Bonus: To seal the deal, press the palms of your hands and fingertips into your cheeks. "You are basically equalizing the oils in the skin by touching your own face — it brings your personal chemistry together," explained Stern. "It gets your natural oils flowing and connecting to your own body versus the brushes and sponges. It’s an old-fashioned tip: before there was blush, women would pinch their cheeks to get it to flush. You have to get human! You’re not wearing a mask here, ladies!"

Use Wet Eye Shadow as Your Liner

The celebrity: Keira Knightley

The hack: To get a soft smoky eye, forgo liquid (or any liner!) in favor of a wet eye shadow at the lash.

The pro tip: "You don’t want to see a gap between the lashes and the line," said Chanel makeup artist Kate Lee, who created this gorgeous look on Keira. "To cheat and make it look professional, you want to make sure it goes to the lashes. To use liquid liner would look harder and more intense. Doing this smoky eye without a line is what makes it soft and beautiful."

DIY it now: Dip a wet brush in your eye shadow (Lee used Chanel Quadra Eyeshadow in Prélude and Tissé Mademoiselle ($61 each) in the color and blend it inwards right to the lashes. "Take the color in between the lashes so you don’t have any gaps," said Lee. Follow by blending it all together with a dry, clean brush. "This makes them look thicker," she added.

Bonus: Start with your eyes and then do your foundation, advised Lee. That way, you can clean up any messes you make to get clean, glowing skin like Keira's!

Secure Braids Without Elastics

The celebrity: Emily Blunt, Golden Globes 2015

The hack: Backcomb the end of a braid to hold it in place

The pro tip: Seeing hairbands on the red carpet takes away from the elegance of a gala-worthy gown and updo. So Laini Reeves avoided it altogether when she secured the ends of Emily's milkmaid braids with a bit of artful teasing.

DIY it now: "I braid the hair right to the very end so you can't fit any more into it and then pinch the end and backcomb to hold it," said Reeves. "It gets a bit fuzzy, but it won't unravel. Doing this — rather than using a hairband — allows me to focus on the shape. It also adds to the texture." She sealed it with Serge Normant Dream Big Instant Volumizing Hair Spray ($25). Finish by pinning the plaits across the nape of your neck like traditional milkmaid braids.

Bonus: Dab a bit of wax on your fingertips to give braids even more grip while you're doing the weave.

Make Two-Day-Old Hair Look Chic in a Chignon

The celebrity: Jennifer Aniston, Golden Globes 2015

The hack: Dirty bun trick

The pro tip: While you may have thought having freshly washed hair for a big event is the way to go, Living Proof ambassador Chris McMillan has other ideas. "Dirty hair has grit and adds better texture," he explained. "These girls are in fancy dresses, so you need to add a little cool. We were inspired by Kate Moss and model hair. You don't want princess or pageant hair." He confirmed that Jennifer's locks were two days old when this style was created.

DIY it now: According to McMillan, this is the "easiest style in the world." Just pull your hair straight back from the sides and tie it into a ponytail. Then, twist it into a bun — "almost like when you're washing your face," noted McMillan. Secure with large Goodie bobby pins. "It doesn't matter if the pins are showing," he added. Heck, if it's good enough for Jennifer, it's good enough for us!

Bonus: If you really can't stomach wearing soiled strands, then use a product like Living Proof Instant Texture Mist ($26) to give hair some hold.

Preserve Blond Hair With a Champagne Rinse

Preserve Blond Hair With a Champagne Rinse

The celebrity: Robin Wright, Golden Globes 2015

The hack: Champagne rinse

The pro tip: To keep Robin Wright's blond color camera-ready, Kyle White of Oscar Blandi prepped her hair with an iced milkshake gloss. "This neutralizes any brassy tones while coating the hair to seal the cuticle tight and lock in shine for the entire night,” he said. If you can't go to a salon to get a gloss applied to your hair, you can create one at home.

DIY it now: Simply pop a bottle of Champagne and get to work. Comb freshly opened Champagne through damp hair. Work it through with your fingers and rinse it out thoroughly. For extra lift, spritz Champagne directly on roots before blow-drying. The golden color of the Champagne will bring out the same tones in your highlights; plus, the consistency and effervescence of Champagne give it volume and shine.

Bonus: Looking for a nonalcoholic option? Apple cider vinegar gives the hair shine and is said to promote blood circulation, according to White.

Contour Using Multiple Shades of Foundation

The celebrity: Allison Williams, Golden Globes 2015

The hack: Foundation contouring 101

The pro tip: While some choose to create facial definition with foundation, concealer, blush, and bronzer, makeup maven Gianpaolo Ceciliato proved you can do it all with just the former. "I always prefer to use two different foundations to contour because it blends better," he said. "If you use a bronzer or powder formula it tends to show or look too drastic. Blending a lighter and darker foundation looks more natural."

DIY it now: Ceciliato applied the lightest shade, Giorgio Armani Maestro Foundation #5 ($64), under her eyes and on her forehead. A slightly darker variation in #5.5 was used on her hairline, jawline, and hallows of her cheek to make her facial structure stand out. He finished her by blending a bronzy hue, #11, on her cheekbones.

Bonus: Before you apply foundation, massage in a skin-firming face serum (Ceciliato used Armani Beauty Crema Nera Extrema, $410). It boosts circulation and builds luminosity.

Tame Flyaways With a Toothbrush

Tame Flyaways With a Toothbrush

The celebrity: Selena Gomez, Golden Globes 2015 afterparty

The hack: Use a household tool to tame frizz

The pro tip: "While you may want to keep your pulled-back hairstyle natural, you don't want a garden of flyaways to crown your hairline," advised celebrity hairstylist Lona Vigi for Nexxus New York Salon Care. Just because you don't have the dough to invest in a Mason Pearson brush doesn't mean you can't smooth out those fuzzy baby hairs in time for a close-up selfie.

DIY it now: "In order to keep the flyaways tame without having to add generous amounts of holding product, I say take it back to basics and add a small amount of a quality sculpting gel such as Nexxus New York Salon Care Exxtra Gel Superior Hold Sculpting Gel ($12) on a toothbrush and brush the flyways back into your style," explained Vigi.

Bonus: Hit the front of the hair with a little blow-dryer heat for extra hold.

Create a Just-Bitten Lip Stain

Create a Just-Bitten Lip Stain

The celebrity: Keira Knightley, Golden Globes 2015

The hack: Fresh lipstick that looks worn

The pro tip: While a bold pout can turn heads, sometimes a more subtle, blended look will actually last all night and feel more modern. Kate Lee used a very specific, multistep lip technique on Keira to create this "bitten, stained berry lip" — as she described.

DIY it now: While you're prepping your skin for all the makeup, add a thick coat of balm, like Chanel Hydra Beauty Nourishing Lip Care ($50). Once you're ready to do your color, Lee said to remove the formula with a cotton tip, leaving a soft, supple surface for a smooth and even application. The exact shade used on Keira was Chanel Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Etienne (available March 2015). Lee painted the lips fully and proceeded to blot it off with a tissue. A key step in the process was to soften the lip line with a cotton tip to avoid that severe '90s look. She then smudged translucent powder around the edges to diffuse the color even more. To create that "just drank a glass of vino" look, Lee used a lip brush to apply more color to the center of the pout and feather it out.

Bonus: Add a dab of highlighter — or white eye shadow — to the top of your cupid's bow to make the curves of your pucker stand out more.

Make Waves Without Hot Tools

The celebrity: Jenna Dewan

The hack: Use just bobby pins to get gorgeous curls

The pro tip: Traveling with all of your beauty tools can be a pain (and get pretty heavy!). That's why we love hairstylist Bridget Brager's quick take on pin curls. All you need are some bobby pins, hair spray, and the hotel room's blow dryer.

DIY it now: Take one-and-a-half-inch sections of clean, dried hair, and wrap them around two fingers angled vertically and close to your head. Once the hair is completely wrapped, secure it with a bobby pin. Finish by doing the rest of your mane, spritz it with a holding mist like Matrix Biolage Complete Control Fast Drying Hair Spray ($19), and blow-dry it to set the pin curls. Do your makeup while it cools. To finish, remove bobby pins, hose it down with hair spray again, and rake through the waves with your fingers to make it look more beachy.

Bonus: Sleep with hair in bigger pin curls to keep the shape overnight.

Hide Your Baby Bangs With a Comb-Over 'Do

Hide Your Baby Bangs With a Comb-Over 'Do

The celebrity: Reese Witherspoon, Golden Globes 2015

The hack: Hide your bangs with finesse

The pro tip: John Frieda hairstylist Adir Abergel gave Reese classic Old Hollywood waves in an over-the-shoulder look — even though the actress has fringe.

DIY it now: First, he rough-dried hair until it was nearly done to help bring out her natural texture and pump up the volume. He then used a boar-bristle brush to blow-dry the top section, sweeping it over the side. This action hid her bangs underneath the combed-over part, which also made her mane seem longer and fuller. He finished by curling it all with a one-and-one-quarter-inch curling iron from the middle down, leaving the ends purposely undone. The final step was to secure half of the hair over to one side with bobby pins.

Bonus: Baby bangs not staying put? Lock them in place with a hardworking hair spray like Frizz Ease Keraflex Flexible Hold Hairspray ($9).
