Lily Collins's Negative-Space Cat Eye Is the Perfect Blend of Edgy and Elegant

After spotting Lily Collins at the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty, we were immediately captivated by her retro-glam, film noir beauty style. She wore a deep berry matte pout, and her hair (courtesy of Gregory Russell) was coiffed with glossy waves. However, if you didn't zoom in on her look, you might have missed its coolest component: a negative-space cat eye.

Makeup artist Fiona Stiles was responsible for the edgy eyeliner creation, which she dubbed "razor sharp with negative space." While this appears simple due to its minimalist nature, those who struggle to create a standard cat eye will likely appreciate the complexity of actually achieving this finished look. However, the technique is the same . . . just be sure to have plenty of makeup remover and cotton swabs at hand!

To try this fabulous flick for yourself, dab on three dots at the outer corner of your eye in a triangle shape and connect the dots (see how this clever wing hack works here) using liquid liner with an ultrafine tip. We like Lancome Artliner Precision Point Liquid Eyeliner ($31), because its foam "brush" allows for exact application. Nervous about drawing on straight lines? Whip out a credit card and use its edge as a stencil. Clean up any errors with the aforementioned makeup remover or even a bit of concealer for a seriously crisp wing.
