10 Influencers Just Designed New MAC Lipsticks — and They're Not What You'd Expect

If you take a look back at MAC's collaboration histories, you'll see that among big names like Lady Gaga and Zac Posen are up-and-coming artists, be they in the fields of fashion, music, or makeup artistry. That's why I wasn't surprised that when the brand announced its upcoming 10-piece lipstick collection designed by influencers (which POPSUGAR exclusively revealed earlier this year), MAC's team had selected a healthy mix of 10 world-famous and under-the-radar beauty pros.

According to Catherine Bomboy Dougherty, the senior vice president of public relations at MAC, that progressive attitude is in the very foundation of the brand. "It's what MAC was built on," she said in an interview with POPSUGAR.

The ideology of "all ages, all races, all sexes" is built into MAC's credo, but I'd believe that "all things chic" is written between the lines of that mission statement. I went on a press trip to MAC's official labs in Toronto to meet them and witness the creation of their bespoke lipsticks, so I can vouch that the 10 influencers selected exude an effortless sense of cool. But more importantly, they really know what they're talking about when it comes to makeup.

I viewed all the different levels of the formulation process, which included mood boards, essays about the ideal color, and hand-mixing pigment in a cosmetic chemist's lab. Each person creating their own lipstick was absolutely fastidious, often adjusting tones by practically invisible fractions to craft their perfect shade.

The perfect shades themselves surprised me. All but one of the influencers created their own variation of nude lipstick. The outlier chose red, which she would have liked to name Vic Woo (a combination of her own name and the iconic MAC Ruby Woo lipstick). I had expected the punchy, rainbow hues that many of them wear on their social channels, but when it came down to it, they simply wanted their neutral lipstick dreams realized. I totally respect this. The tones shifted from deep to light, cool to warm, and matte to sheer. While some may look similar to the naked eye, I saw firsthand that many of the amateur chemists had women of a wide range of skin tones test out their shade as they mixed them. It was clear that they wanted their formula to work well on a variety of skin tones.

"That's one of the reasons why we have such amazing respect for them," said Bomboy Dougherty. "They are really well-versed on the products, the textures, the finishes, the ingredients, the undertones." She laughed as she added, "I felt like when we were working with these people that some of them know our product better than we do sometimes."

That understanding of MAC formulas comes from the influencers' long relationships with the products, be they personal or professional. A lot of them started out as makeup artists before shifting their attention to social media. In fact, Samantha Ravndahl — known as @ssssamanthaa to her 2.4 million followers on Instagram — worked at a MAC counter in her early days of makeup artistry. "Our artists at the brand were so excited that we chose her," revealed Bomboy Dougherty. "She's part of that community and our artists internally really support that."

Sadly, you'll only be able to buy the colors made by your country's corresponding influencer(s). For example, if you're based in the United States, you will have shopping access exclusively to Gabriel Zamora and Laura Lee's lipsticks, while Brazilian MAC fans can just get Victoria Ceridono's shade. But believe me when I say that all 10 of these individuals are worth getting to know. Read on for more insight into their creative processes, including their fantasy names for their shades (which include inspiration from Disney princesses, furry friends, and their fans) and a glimpse at the shades before they launch later this year.

Caro Daur, Germany

Caro Daur, Germany

Her shade's description: A warm, brown-toned nude. "I prefer brown [over pink nudes] because I love bronzer!" she said.
Her inspiration: Cinnamon, or more specifically, a cinnamon pastry. "I love cinnamon. . . . In Hamburg, where I'm from, there's this cinnamon roll thing called franzbrötchen . . ." Caro added, "I love the spice and I put it on everything."
Her ideal name for her lipstick: Something punny. "Because my name is because my name is Caro, maybe "Cinnaroll," she said, laughing.
Her favorite way to wear it: All day and all night. If you're into a more minimalist, try pairing it with some cheek color and mascara, but turn up the glam for evening by rocking it with "a lot of bronzer and a lot of glow." (That's how Caro affectionately refers to highlighter.)

Gabriel Zamora, USA

Gabriel Zamora, USA

His shade description: A caramel-colored nude. "I want it to be more brown than the pinkier tones, [so it flatters] different skin tones," Gabriel explained.
His inspiration: He kept a variety of complexions at top of mind while blending his dream shade, but also focused on what he'd like to wear. "I want it to look like a light nude on deeper skin tones — I love that," he shared. "I want it to look almost skin-like on me, and then a very Fall color on lighter complexions."
His ideal name for his lipstick: Obsessed. "I always say obsessed," Gabriel revealed. "When I love something so much, especially on my YouTube channel, I always say obsessed." And, naturally, his ideal lipstick color is his obsession.
His favorite way to wear it: He planned on creating something very versatile because he wants to "wear the living hell out of it." Try playing up the shade with a very dramatic eye, or just stack on some false lashes and enhance your natural beauty. It's truly wearable day and night. "It's like you went out Saturday night, but your friends want to get mimosas Sunday, so you can still put the same lipstick on and you will be fine," he joked.
His love of lips: Whether you realize it or not, life is all about lips! Gabriel is passionate about this part of the face. "I just love soft lips," he explained. "It's one of my favorite features on my face even though they're not all mine." He added, "they can be so sexy, so sensual, but so bold. When you talk to someone, you always stare at lips, especially if you're in a business conversation or if you're attracted to someone. It's always the lips."

Fleur de Force, UK

Fleur de Force, UK

Her shade description: Her lips, but better. "It's a little mauvey, a deep nude, really," she said. It features a creamy, balmy texture that MAC calls Cremesheen.
Her inspiration: Past shopping experiences (and struggles) lead Fleur to this moment. "It's basically my dream color, but you know, when you can’t quite find the perfect one." She now has her perfect lipstick.
Her ideal name for her lipstick: "I am terrible at thinking of names," she said. "It’s my real weakness in life!"
Her favorite way to wear it: Fleur says it goes with any look. "Daytime, nighttime, a nice subtle smoky eye . . ." she suggested. "That’s the beauty of this shade — you can throw it in your handbag and pop it on." She noted that it wouldn't even be a problem if you didn't have a mirror with you, because this shade is so easy to apply and wear. (She personally is not too big of a fan of lip liner, so she'd skip that step.)

Victoria Ceridono, Brazil

Victoria Ceridono, Brazil

Her shade description: Of all the influencers in this lineup, Victoria was the only one to pick classic red. She even had everyone in the lab (including me!) try on the color to ensure it flattered all complexions. "I find myself mixing many different reds to get this unique shade that is a bit deeper and a bit darker than Ruby Woo," she explained. This hue is a vampier version of MAC's classic ruby shade.
Her inspiration: She wanted to make every woman's "second red." Most people wouldn't give up their go-to crimson shade, so she wanted to create a deeper one. But this tint was the obvious choice in her mind. "Red is the most iconic lipstick color that you can think of," said Victoria. "Even the emoji is red lipstick!"
Her ideal name for her lipstick: Vic Woo, falling in the footsteps of Ruby Woo and Riri Woo (Rihanna's limited-edition take on the famous shade).
Her favorite way to wear it: She loves how red translates easily into multiple looks, but her top technique — as you can see here! — is to pair it with a cat eye. "The magic of red is that you can do only red lipstick and not even do perfect foundation," she shared. "You just do a BB cream, and you do the red and just a bit of mascara, and it's also perfect." She also loves the look of what she calls the "casual red," which is when the color is applied directly from the tube. "You have kind of blurred edges so it's not too perfect and defined . . . more like, 'I didn't make the effort.'"

Her shade description: A "universally flattering natural shade" with pinky flesh undertones. "It's sheer and moisturizing, which makes lips look juicy, glowy, and youthful," Alessandra shared.
Her inspiration: The makeup equivalent of a go-to outfit. "I wanted it to be like your favorite pair of jeans, a timeless classic you’ll wear forever," she said.
Her ideal name for her lipstick: My Lips. "That’s what it's meant to do — enhance your own lips and not look too makeup-y or heavy."
Her favorite way to wear it: The beauty director of Glamour UK advises you pair this pink-toned hue with fresh, radiant, lightly tanned skin.

Nikkia Joy, Australia

Nikkia Joy, Australia

Her shade description: A soft, natural matte nude with a pink undertone.
Her inspiration: Her own go-to look. "I'm kind of known for nude lips and dark, smoky eyes," Nikkia explained. "Velvet Teddy was so close to being perfect, but a teeny little bit too dark for lighter skin tones."
Her ideal name for her lipstick: Joy, just like her name.
Her favorite way to wear it: While she thinks her dark smoky eye look would be best, she thinks it's quite versatile and will flatter every skin tone. "It's a great everyday color as well for work; you can just slap it on." She'll be pairing it with her favorite MAC lip liner, Boldly Bare.
Pro tip: Cleaning up a messy lip line doesn't have to be a hassle. "If you do make a mistake, a lot of people clean it with concealer," she said, "but it's actually a lot easier to clean up with a pigmented pressed powder." Nikkia recommends using your favorite foundation powder on an angled brush to sharpen up the edges of your lips. "You can clean it up without getting any jagged lines."

Samantha Ravndahl, Canada

Her shade description: A sheer, pinky nude with brown tones. I watched Samantha painstakingly blend her shade to perfection and test each version on a variety of women to ensure it would look good on all skin tones.
Her inspiration: Simplicity. "The past couple of years, makeup has been all about technique and learning new things, and it's been kind of overwhelming," she said. "This year, I want to focus more on quick, easy things we can do to feel pretty and put together." This lipstick is a fabulous start. She opted for a sheerer texture so it wears off evenly (not patchy!) and is more comfortable to rock all day long.
Her ideal name for her lipstick: She'd pay homage to her dog. "My dog's name is Arrow, and I thought that it would be cool to name it Bow," she shared.
Her favorite way to wear it: "Super dolled up or super dressed down." It'll pair beautifully with a dramatic eye but will also be a nice choice on a more casual day when all you want to wear is some mascara, highlighter, and lipstick.
Fun fact: Growing up, MAC was the brand that Samantha saved her pennies for and eventually ended up working for! Though she may have left her sales days behind, she still has an intense love for the brand. "Getting the opportunity to do this really felt like everything I've done has come full circle," she said.

Fouz AlFahad, Middle East

Her shade description: A matte deep rose hue with neutral undertones.
Her inspiration: Women of the Middle East! "I love seeing younger women from my region becoming more independent and hardworking, so the shade I came up with represents that," said Fouz.
Her ideal name for her lipstick: Boss. "I'd like girls to love wearing it, and the name might make them feel more encouraged to work hard and do better."
Her favorite way to wear it: However you'd like — it's that versatile. "I would pair it with a subtle eye look, [but it] even can go full glam with a smoky eye and contoured face," she explained. "That's what I love about my shade."

Laura Lee, USA

Laura Lee, USA

Her shade description: A "universally flattering pinky nudish color" with cool undertones.
Her inspiration: Herself. "I'm such a narcissist for even saying this out loud, but they [the MAC product development team] pulled my inspo board that I sent them, and it's literally all pictures of myself," she said, laughing. 'They were like, 'Laura, your inspo is you.'" (You have to admire a confident woman! Go Laura.) She explained that fans often ask what lipstick she's wearing, but she can never tell them one color, as she often mixes up to four shades to get her ideal hue. "I'm literally just trying to make it easy for myself here," she joked.
Her ideal name for her lipstick: Laura was on the fence, debating between a cat-themed name like Meow because she loves her "kitty kitties," or something "really Southern." "Like Sweet Tea, Mama Bird, Sugar," she suggested.
Her favorite way to wear it: Laura gushed about the possibilities of this "very universal" lip color. She suggested a black smoky eye or a dramatic lash or even a bit of color. "Maybe a smoked-out bottom blue liner," she said.

Marie Lopez, France

Marie Lopez, France

Her shade description: A soft, caramel-toned nude. Marie was the only influencer to choose MAC's Glaze formula, which results in sheer pigmentation with a slightly balmy finish.
Her inspiration: A nude lip that could be worn all year round. "I really wanted to say I could wear it in Winter and Summer," Marie explained. "That was the most interesting to me . . . to be able to wear it when I want."
Her ideal name for her lipstick: Brave (though it's already a name used in MAC's lipstick lineup). "I have a tattoo on my arm, a quotation from the Disney movie Brave," she revealed. "[Merida] is my favorite princess." The quote says, "You have to be brave enough to see it."
Her favorite way to wear it: Paired with something simple but easy to wear to a party. "Probably something very nude on the skin, but maybe more black or brown on the eyes."
