I'm an Eye Shadow Amateur and Even I Can Use Fenty Beauty's New Glittery Palette

Everyone had the same question when Rihanna first dropped Fenty Beauty: where are all the colors? While she delivered the gorgeous purple Unicorn highlighter stick and the now-famous Trophy Wife gold, the focus was on complexion. She definitely delivered, debuting with 40 shades of foundation and contouring sticks for every skin tone. But we were eager for something brighter from the woman who once made everyone want to try green lipstick.

Turns out, she was just waiting for the holidays. And she did not disappoint, debuting lip glosses and lipsticks in bold, glittery colors. But the real star of Fenty Beauty's holiday bundle is, hands down, the Galaxy Eyeshadow Palette ($59).

There are 14 shades in the brand's first-ever palette, and every single one of them has a metallic, shimmery finish. There are both iridescent and layerable options and more highly pigmented, intense hues. I tested them out by creating two looks myself.

Let me be clear: I am no eye shadow expert. I could definitely use a little more practice blending and cut creasing, but if my amateur self was able to easily use this palette, then anyone can. Read on to see the looks I made and get more details on the formulas and shades!

Look #1: Blue

For the first look, I attempted a blue smoky eye by using the shades Midnight Bolt (true blue with superfine glitter), Cosmic Ocean (sheer aqua glitter), Ultraviolet (smoky violet with iridescent glitter), and Sunburst (amber with gold glitter).

The office lighting doesn't do it justice in this selfie, but I was really feelin' myself! I expected the blue to turn out as pigmented as Rihanna's makeup artist Priscilla Ono's eye look was when she tried it, but it was actually more of a sheer veil. That's good news for me since I'm waaay more mistake-prone than her. Apparently, the color appears more intense if you use a wet brush instead.

Look #1: Blue

I used the dark blue around the crease of my eye and winged out, then I patted both the glittery aqua and purple shades in the center. I'm obsessed with the shimmery, silvery, iridescent finish of Ultraviolet. I wanted to layer it over everything. I was also super impressed with Sunburst, the glitter gold I applied to my inner corners. It brightened up my entire face.

I figured these shimmer shades would work well as highlighters, too, so I tried to dust on Milky Way (ivory with iridescent glitter) on my cheekbones. Sadly, I felt that the fallout was too much and getting all over my face instead of where I wanted. It's not ideal if you're using a fan brush, so maybe stick to an eye shadow blending brush if you plan to make these eye shadows do double duty.

Look #2: Rose Gold

I'll say right off the bat that I like this look better. It's more low-key and more wearable for every day than the prior one and that's because I only used two shades: Mars on Fire (sheer copper rose glitter) and Meteor Crush (sheer pink and gold glitter). I kept on the Sunburst gold in the inner corners of my eyes because it was too damn pretty to take off.

You guys, I literally can't stop staring at my eyes with these two hues brushed on. I used a light hand, so there's only the slightest tint of red. Red might sound like a terrible color to put on your eyelids, but the tiny flecks of gold really offset it so it appears more rose gold. You can use either shade alone if you want just a little something extra without going full glam.

Overall, I have to say I'm extremely impressed with Fenty Beauty's first-ever palette. I'd recommend mixing it up with some matte shadows you already own since each color is super intense (unless that's what you want!). With these shadows on, I felt like a walking video taken using Kira Kira (you know, the app that makes everything on Instagram extra sparkly).

I can't wait to really indulge in the most extra side of myself when the holiday parties come along and my eyelids are shining bright like a — wait for it — diamond (sorry, had to!).
