If you tend to use a lot of hair products or have an oily scalp, you may want to preface your workout with a proper degunk. "Clarifying shampoo can help remove any product buildup on the hair, which, if not managed, can contribute to pimples and irritation on the scalp and around the hairline," warns Eliut Rivera, owner of Eliut Salon in New York. We suggest Fekkai Apple Cider Shampoo ($11), which leaves hair feeling and smelling fresh.

If you want to use a conditioner, opt for one without wax or silicones, especially if they're listed as one of the top ingredients. "These can actually dehydrate and suffocate the hair strands, which may lead to more limp and dry locks over time," explains hairstylist Christopher Marrero. "I love Pai-Shau Replenishing Cream Conditioner ($28) because it's a superhydrating, lightweight formula that won't clog up your follicles," he adds.

Don't wait until after your sweat session to apply a dry shampoo, suggests Kathy Benghanem, a celebrity stylist and colorist at Gemini14 Salon in New York. "Spray the dry shampoo section by section to the root of your hair prior to working out," she says. "It's important to coat the hair before you work out so the powder absorbs the sweat before the hair cuticle does. Klorane Dry Shampoo With Oat Milk ($20) has a nonaerosol pump, which allows the molecules to be large enough to coat the cuticle well and in return absorbs more sweat," she explains.

If you're heading somewhere straight from the studio and don't have time for a full rinse and blow dry, just focus on the areas that require (and tend to attract) the most attention, suggests Adrienne Valenta, a colorist and product educator at Gene Juarez Salon & Spas. "You don't necessarily need to use shampoo, either. Rene Furterer Lumicia Illuminating Shine Rinse ($24) is a supereasy way to do this and will give you great results. Simply wet selected strands (tying the rest of your hair back), then spray them down with the rinse, quick dry, and style! This product really leaves hair clean from all build-up — sweat, product, you name it," she explains.

To avoid having sweat drip down through the length of your hair, Benghanem suggests tying your hair in a loose top-knot bun. "This will also set your hair to have some bounce and volume once you've finished with your workout," she says. Postgrind, Rivera suggests wrapping your hair in a microfiber towel like the Aquis Lisse Luxe Hair Turban ($30). "These towels are usually light and easy to carry around for workouts. Try to absorb all extra sweat from the face, neck, and back before letting your hair down," he says.

It might sound counterintuitive to add oil at the same time you're trying to reduce it, but Rivera says applying a small amount can do wonders. "Milbon Luminous Bodifying Oil ($36) is great for fine and coarse hair. The oil blocks humidity and keeps hair smooth. Work a dab of the product into towel-dried hair and blow-dry the day of your workout to reduce frizz from sweat," he advises.

Benghanem says you should use the cool air setting to blow-dry select pieces as well as remove dry shampoo that has been collecting unwanted sweat. "Once your hair is completely dry, you can use a hair refresher. I love Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($22) because the smell is absolutely amazing," she says.

Last, but certainly not least, Marrero recommends that his clients who exercise do a weekly rinse to strip sweat, dead skin cells, oil, waxes, styling products, and free radicals that can build up over time. "Take a tablespoon of baking soda ($1) and mix it with a tablespoon of your shampoo. Massage the mix into your hair for about one to two minutes, concentrating on the roots. Then, rinse and follow with a hydrating, lightweight mask to keep hair clean and healthy," he explains.
