Here's the Sneaky Way Meghan Markle Just Switched Up Her Hair

There was so much to take in during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's trip to Birmingham, England, on March 8. For one, the duchess-to-be donned a J. Crew coat, proving once and for all that blue and black do go together. More poignantly, Meghan made our hearts all melt when she broke royal protocol by hugging a schoolgirl/aspiring actor and gave her some words of encouragement. (In other news, I, too, am in desperate need of a hug, Meghan Markle). Yes, there was a lot to see, so we wouldn't fault you for missing the sneaky way Meghan switched up her hair.

Unlike Kate Middleton, who likes her new cuts to be front and center (there's even a mysterious conspiracy theory surrounding Kate's hair), Meghan's change was pretty subtle. She showed up to Birmingham with light, sun-kissed red highlights.

As People noted, this technique adds a quiet dimension to Meghan's look, and it is a great option for "a woman on the go" (or one who likes to take her time in between salon appointments, as this is a low-maintenance dye job). The magazine spoke with celebrity colorist and co-owner of Lukaro Salon, Rona O'Connor, about the bleach-free style.

If you want to get our own, O'Connor suggests "choosing a shade one-two shades lighter [than your own]." Ask your stylist to paint on "ribbon" highlights two to three inches from your scalp. Each one should be an inch apart and applied in an irregular pattern to enhance the "naturalness" of this look.
