6 Hairstyles We Predict Will Take Over Coachella This Year

Award Season. Taxes. Coachella. Each year, we know these three things to be certain. For the latter, we know our Pinterest and Instagram feeds will be rampant with a mix of eccentric, bohemian, and rock-inspired beauty looks. With just weeks to go, Coachella will return for back-to-back weekends, and Sephora returns as the official beauty sponsor for the music and arts festival, which is fitting, because nailing down your makeup and hair situation for those long days is an art in itself, amirite?

With input from Sephora, we've honed in on the six hair trends you'll be seeing all over the festival. Sephora will set up shop on the festival grounds, offering professionals from Bumble and Bumble, IGK, Hush, and Amika to create these specific looks — along with necessities like air-conditioning and WiFi — so you can pop in for a touchup ahead of Cardi B's set or spend your time party hopping instead of primping. These looks are also relatively easy to DIY at home. Makeup touchups will be provided onsite as well by Sephora Collection, including holographic tattoos.

Overall, the hair theme this year is largely space inspired. Why? Galaxy everything is having a moment, and who doesn't want to blast into a different universe, if only for a weekend? For styling, think Zenon, Girl of the 21st Century — and please Google if you're not familiar — with buns, metallic and iridescent highlights, and hair tattoos. If space isn't your jam, there's plenty of rock and boho inspiration, too.

Holographic Space Buns

Holographic Space Buns

Space Buns will be popular again, but this time with a galactic accessory: iridescent hair foam. The focus is less on a glittery or sequined root and more about creating faux highlights throughout the hair for a metallic or holographic finish.

IGK's Foamo ($22), shown here in Meteor, is a holographic hair foam that offers an oil-slick finish, and it changes colors in the light. Work the foam through your hair prior to putting it into the buns, focusing on your part, underneath your hair, and the ends.

Space Crown

Flower crowns are passé at this point. A space crown, on the other hand, marries the classic braid to the cosmic theme.

Foamo, shown here in Moon Rock, was worked into the ends of the hair to enhance the crown braid. For a more opaque finish, apply the mousse directly the hair and work through with a comb or your fingers. Otherwise, create a diffused look by working the mousse into your hands, and scrunch the hair.

For the glittery finish to amp up the look, use a IGK Preparty Hair Strobing Glitter Spray ($16) to enhance your holographic hair, or apply it to your body.

Galactic Hair
Bumble and Bumble

Galactic Hair

The theme for hair this year will lean harder into intergalactic territory than ever before, but that doesn't mean you have to change your hair color! Channel the stars in the Milky Way, which can easily be created with any hairstyle you want to sport: braids, waves, ponytails. All you need are these tiny LED lights, which are battery-powered and can hook onto the collar of your shirt or bra strap.

The best part of this look is that you'll stand out without a lot of effort. For this specific look, the model is sporting a messy braid around the hairline, with the LED lights woven through.

To add an effortlessness and texture to the look, try Bumble and Bumble Thickening Dryspun Finish Spray ($14), which is great for fattening up braids and adding grit to soft hair.

Heavy Metal Braids
Amika

Heavy Metal Braids

One of the biggest trends from last year's festival was embellished braids. Festivalgoers were hooking all kinds of accessories into their hair, from tiny hoops to safety pins. The look is equal parts hard and soft, depending on how you style it, and will be a nice departure from space-themed styles.

If your have fine hair, incorporate a Amika Un.Done Volume and Matte Texture Spray ($25) to help thicken your strands so it's easier to braid. Slippery hair will fall out over time; adding some necessary roughness with product can keep your braid in all day long.

Hair Tattoos
Hush

Hair Tattoos

Tattoos of all kinds are rampant at Coachella, and this year the focus will be on taking the temporary tattoo trend up to the hair. Stencils are a great way to get a precise design and can be as large as you want.

They can also be as intricate as you want! Remember that shades like blue, purple, and hunter green will be more subtle on brunettes.

If you want to amp up the color, lean toward lighter shades for brunettes and deeper shades for blondes.

Cosmic Curls

Cosmic Curls

If you're not interested in the stencil route and want a different take on the space theme, pull several small, random pieces of hair, and spray them different shades for a technicolor effect. The pairing of deep magenta, blue, and purple looks both harmonious and effortless on this brunette.

Hush Prism Airbrush Spray ($24) is one of the easier ways to achieve temporary brighter color. You can build it up to create a gradual ombré effect or opt to add several layers for an opaque finish. This product does wash out with shampoo, but note that nothing is perfect, so if you have lighter hair, it may take a few washes to remove the residual color.

To apply, always make sure your hair is styled first; don't blow-dry, curl or flatiron your hair after applying the spray. To diffuse the color, brush through it after applying.
