The Biggest Beauty Trends of 2019 Are Worth Revisiting in the New Year

January is often an opportunity to explore new things and shed the bad habits that no longer bring us joy, but when it comes to beauty, there were a few looks that took 2019 by storm that may just be too hard to part with. There have been cool hair color techniques, graphic swipes of eyeliner, and artistic nail art we saw in the last 12 months that we'd like to carry with us into the new year.

Unlike our exes' contact info, these are the 2019 beauty trends we're not ready to get rid of yet — check them out ahead.

The Modern Shag

This year's updated shag is actually two-fold: "The two popular shag styles will be ultra curly, ultra layered and straight with long curtain bangs that sweep," said hairstylist Devin Toth. "The curly shag is very round with a pure release of texture. It will be a seamless transition from bangs to short layers to long layers to bottom length. The straight shag can be styled however you want, but it generally has longer layers with the focus of the style being the bold curtain bangs — sweeping but not fully connected to the rest of the style."

The French Manicure

The french manicure came back in a big way in 2019, with everyone from celebrities to people walking down the street wearing the trend. And it wasn't just your traditional white-tipped look, either; there were colors, the "french moon" design, and "floating tips." We love this neon version Hailey Baldwin wore in July.

"Negative space" hair color is the placement technique we didn't see coming, but is actually brilliant. "This is the look on all the hottest models and influencers filling your Instagram," Jack Howard, colorist at UK's Paul Edmonds Salon and Schwarzkopf global Blondme ambassador, told POPSUGAR. "It's lighter around the face and has a balance that's pleasing to the eye. You need that contrast to stop the color from looking solid, which can look like an ombré or a single process."

Graphic Liner

This year was all about making a statement with swipes of graphic eyeliner. "Pair colors like cobalt blues, deep greens, and traditional black liners with a natural-looking skin look," celebrity makeup artist Neil Scibelli told POPSUGAR. We couldn't get enough of the floating eyeliner look, which was first spotted on actress Lucy Boynton at the SAG Awards.

Modern Fine-Line Tattoos

Tattooist Keith "Bang Bang" McCurdy — whose painstaking, fine line work fueled the tiny tattoo trend last year — predicted 2019 would incorporate the same intricate details, but they may start to look a little larger. (He was right.)

The Bob Haircut

It seems every celebrity in Hollywood hopped on the bob haircut train this year (even our POPSUGAR beauty editor couldn't resist the style), but the variations ranged from blunt ends to shaggier cuts, and we loved each one all the same.

Watercolor Eye Shadow

Makeup artist Lisa Eldridge created a dreamy, multicolor eye makeup look on Cara Delevingne back in September, and the swirls of tie-dye have been haunting our morning beauty routines ever since.

Frosted Metallic Nails

Celebrity manicurist and Kiss Nails brand ambassador Gina Edwards sees pastel metallics being big for Spring. "Designers have created their 2019 Spring collections to emulate a bit of the '60s with adding a fresh updated twist," she said. "Frosted metallics and sheers will start the anticipation for the same on nail trends. I predict that superchic pastels layered with a sheer frost will make a subtle statement for the upcoming season."
