The Secret to Angela Bassett’s Long-Lasting Ombré Lip at the Oscars Was $19

Angela Bassett showing up at the Oscars radiating vintage Hollywood glamour was no accident. "I was thinking about the jazz era — the '20s," Bassett's longtime makeup artist D'Andre Michael told POPSUGAR. He and Bassett listened to the genre of music while getting ready, which inspired her smoky lids — created by shades in MAC Art Library Eye Shadow Palettes ($48) in Nude Model, It's Designer, and Flame Boyant Eye Shadow Palette — and an ombré berry lip.

"I wanted to compliment the dress and not match it, and I never really do a dark lip on her so I thought, 'Lets do dark today,'" he said. To create the ombré look, Michael first lined the lips with MAC Lip Pencil in Vino ($18) and smeared it toward the center of the mouth. Next, he swept on MAC Powder Kiss Lipstick in Velvet Punch and MAC Lip Pencil in Nightmoth ($18). Lastly, he added dabs of MAC another Powder Kiss Lipstick in Reverence ($19), a warm matte pink, at the center of the lips for highlight. "[Bassett] said she loves the feeling of the Powder Kiss because it feels soft on [her] lips."
