The Top Hair Trends in Seoul, South Korea, Are Just as Dreamy as You'd Think

The top hair trends that are emerging from Seoul, South Korea, all have one thing in common: they're subtle. The masterminds behind these looks aim to create hair that doesn't look like it's been altered or styled. Despite the intention behind them, the hairstyles are bound to stand out with their dreamy bounce and melting colors.

We tapped pro hairstylist Dean of Seoul's The Days Hair Salon and Seoul Jeong — a Korean-born POPSUGAR editor who spent two weeks exploring in the city — for what they view as the area's biggest hair trends. Read on to learn more.

According to Dean, numerous clients of The Days Hair Salon have requested perms, but with what he calls a "natural" style. They are often digital perms, a less chemically damaging version of the perm that creates a natural, full-bodied loose wave.

The first day Jeong was in Seoul, she booked an appointment to try this perm. "Many Korean people have naturally straight hair, so we get perms to get natural-looking waves and body," she said.

Both Dean and Jeong agree that ash-toned hair created with the balayage technique is a top hair color trend among Koreans. "After it fades out, it still looks nice," Dean said.

"In Korean, the word 'hwang-in' describes our naturally golden undertones," Jeong said. "To look fairer, many Koreans get the ash-toned hair color to cancel out our natural warmth."

A side fringe — not to be mistaken with side bangs — is another top requested hair look at The Days Hair Salon. The look features face-framing hair that is styled to swoop to the side with an obvious curve. Dean claims the look creates "a smaller face," a feature that some Koreans find desirable.
