"Blue Moon" Nail Art Is Like a Modern French Manicure, and It'll Be Everywhere This Spring

The season won't be the only thing changing in the next few weeks. Our beloved french manicure is getting an Instagram-friendly makeover in the form of "blue moon" nail art, and experts predict it's going to be one of the biggest nail trends of 2020.

According to Michelle Saunders James, an Oakland, CA-based celebrity nail artist and owner of Saunders and James salon, blue (in all shades) will be a go-to nail color this Spring. "Sky blue, lake blue, neon blue, retro '90s blue β€” this is the season to wear it because by next year it will go into hibernation," she recently told POPSUGAR.

As with any color that comes in a variety of hues, blue nail polish can obviously be worn in a myriad of ways. In fact, one of James's favorite nail art looks for the season is one she calls "blue moon," which features tiny half moons drawn in different shades of blue near the bottom cuticle line. The style can also be created in reverse, painting the nail a shade of blue and leaving space for a clear half moon shape at the bottom of the nail. However you choose to wear the style, it's relatively painless to re-create.

To DIY the look, James recommends using Essie's Butler Please nail polish ($9). The only other thing we'd recommend is that you have a steady hand, a dependable top coat, and a handy lining tool at your side as well. Check out a few of our favorite takes on blue moon nail art ahead.
