Hair pulled back into a ponytail with an average hair tie: effortless and casual. Hair pulled back into a ponytail with a jumbo scrunchie or huge rhinestone clips: exciting and dynamic. Both are great, but when you can, why not go the extra mile?

Ever since hair accessories like headbands, claw clips, scrunchies, and other statement clips made their triumphant return a few years ago, the latest hair-accessory trends have been breathing new life into our tried-and-true styles — and luckily, that isn't slowing down in 2022.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we got used to doing less with our hair. "Because of that, we got more creative with our accessories and experimented with new styles that were low maintenance but gave high payoff," Laura Polko, celebrity hairstylist and Scunci accessory ambassador, tells POPSUGAR.

In 2022, we're seeing more of the same styles, except everything is supersized. "People are eager to add more color and adornment into their beauty routine but in a simple and easy way, which is what hair accessories offer," says Nate Rosenkranz, New York City-based celebrity hairstylist. "They are looking for these small yet impactful ways to express their creativity."

Stacking accessories will continue to be a huge trend in 2022. "What I love about this trend is that it allows for a lot of creative expression. There are endless different accessories to play with that work for this trend so you can make it completely your own and fit your individual style and mood," Rosenkranz says.

Our favorite take on the trend, which was all over New York Fashion Week, is with stacked barrettes. There's no such thing as overdoing it, either — incorporate as many pearl or jelly barrettes and rhinestone snap clips as your heart wants.

2022 Hair-Accessory Trend: Hair Scarves

Like many retro hair trends, the '60s-inspired hair scarf is expected to make a comeback in 2022. Not only can scarves prove functional — they can cover up greasy roots on third-day hair or protect it from the outdoor elements — but they can also elevate your entire ensemble. The best part? There are endless options to choose from, from bright patterned prints to solid neutrals.

2022 Hair-Accessory Trend: Claw Clips

If you are in a rush or just don't feel like styling your hair, a claw clip is an easy way to dress up your look. This '90s accessory made a huge comeback during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it's showing no signs of going away anytime soon.

They come in a variety of styles, colors, and sizes to fit every beauty vibe. There are also a number of different ways you can wear them: with your hair twisted, in a bun, in a half-up half-down style — the list goes on and on.

The pros all agree that jumbo scrunchies will reign supreme in 2022. "With this trend, we'll see more of oversized accessories — extralarge scrunchies in decadent, lush, or unconventional fabrics," Rosenkranz says. Polko notes that we'll see an uptick in long bows and embellished styles, too.

No surprise here, but it all comes down to comfort. "We're all looking for ways to play up our 'cozy,' chic hair looks," Polko says. Celebrity hairstylist Kristin Ess adds that they're "easy to pop in, easy to take out for a Zoom call." What more could you want?

2022 Hair-Accessory Trend: Thread

These days, great hairstyles are all in the details — and that couldn't be more true with the thread trend. The ancient practice of hair threading dates back centuries, with the West African technique involving wrapping wool, yarn, or nylon around sections of hair to create intricate hair sculptures that protect it from the elements. The latest iterations of the thread trend can be woven through braids or various hairstyles, and the sky is the limit on fabrics and colors; you can choose leather, silk, tinsel, or gold string to add a fun peekaboo effect to any look.

2022 Hair-Accessory Trend: Chunky Headbands

There's a lot to love about headbands: they effortlessly conceal a bad hair day, keep your hair out of your face, and make you look put together instantly. "When you want to dress up your look in a flash, an oversized headband is the go-to accessory for you," Polko says. "I always love a Zoom statement headband that can transform my hair look in a matter of seconds."

It's the only accessory that looks equally as good with your meeting attire as it does with your Sunday afternoon sweats. "For the first half of the year, while we're still living that pandemic life, I'm predicting we'll be all about whatever feels cozy and low effort," Ess says.
