If you're on TikTok, you might have seen numerous users touting the power of putting a potato on your pimple, starting with the viral video from @sierrastyles. If so, you might be wondering: is it too good to be true? Does this at-home acne hack actually work?
To find out, we asked dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, whether this DIY trick had any merit. Turns out, it does: "Potatoes can help the skin in main ways," he said. "First, starches soothe inflammation and absorb oil. Second, because potatoes are rich in vitamin C, they can help minimize the risk of developing dark spots as the pimple resolves."
Of course, it's not the end-all answer: "A potato in no way takes the place of traditional acne products and treatments," Dr. Zeichner said. "But if you are quarantined, at least your pantry may offer you some skin benefits."
So there you have it. If you are trying to alleviate a blemish and have no other options or just looking to do more at-home facials, using a potato or two might be the way to go.
