Ariel Winter's custody battle is over. The 17-year-old actress has been emancipated, she confirmed in a tweet on Friday. The news comes about three years after her mom, Chrisoula Workman, faced allegations of physical and emotional abuse. Ariel was removed from Chrisoula's home and placed in the care of her older sister, Shanelle Gray, who was named her permanent guardian. Ariel reflected on the outcome and thanked Shanelle in the following statement about her new chapter:
I am now officially emancipated!!! I'm really lucky I have an amazing support system and lovely people in my life who have given me the support and guidance to have been given this wonderful opportunity. Most importantly I want to thank @shanelle_gray and my father for their special support regarding this matter, I really couldn't have done it without them. Thank you to all of my family, friends, and fans who have supported me through all of my endeavors in life, and have encouraged me. Thank you for making my life so special! I can't wait to embark on my new adventures. [heart] xo
In the midst of her family challenges, the Modern Family actress has had an incredible year in the spotlight. During a break from filming the show's sixth season in March, she traded glamour for slime time at the Kids' Choice Awards, where the cast got completely covered in green goo. Her personal life has been just as adorable — in April, Ariel attended prom with her boyfriend, Laurent Claude Gaudette.
