It was a no-brainer that Kate's first solo engagement was actually on Prince Charles' behalf. At the time he referred to her as his "darling daughter-in-law", and this affection he feels for her has always been clear.

While William was occupied with Prince George, Kate and Charles shared a joke at Trooping the Colour 2015.

Similarly, they made each other laugh at a Buckingham Palace garden party in 2012.

On their first joint engagement back in 2011 it was clear Kate was learning the ropes from her new father-in-law.

There was much hilarity on the balcony at Trooping the Colour earlier this year.

Kate was there to support her father-in-law in a project that was personally important to him — at Dumfries House in 2013.

It's clear Charles' affection for Kate is reciprocated.

Kate said in her engagement interview, "I was quite nervous about meeting William's father, but he was very, very welcoming, very friendly, it couldn't have gone easier, really for me."
