That same draw toward a smaller life is why Charlie planned to buy a ranch, but he had "something of a nervous breakdown" and ended up backing out.
He credits his social awareness to his upbringing, saying, "I grew up in a pretty socially and economically depressed place. I felt really conscious as a very, very young man — like 7 or 8 — that everybody was just so caught up in survival and the drudgery of just getting through the day."
