22 Hotels Fit For the Royal Family

In 2015 Prince Harry spent three months in Africa to spend time on conservation projects, and while working with endangered black rhino in Namibia, he stayed at the fuss-free rustic luxe Olive Grove.

Three generations of royalty have checked into the idyllic beachfront property. The queen and Prince Philip and Prince Charles and Camilla were followed by Prince Harry in 2012, during his first royal tour. Harry sampled the jerked smoked chicken breast with ackee, saltfish with green bananas, and steamed callaloo during his stay at the Jamaican resort.

During their late-season package trip in 2011, Zara and Mike Tindall spent their time sunbathing, reading, and going to the beach bar at the Columbia Beach Resort.

Ahead of their 2014 tour of Australia and New Zealand, William and Kate left Prince George at home and headed for a romantic trip a deux in the Indian Ocean. Condé Nast Traveler named Cheval Blanc Randheli Hotel as the best hotel in the Maldives for "design-savvy perfectionists."

Charles and Camilla chose the lakeside retreat to celebrate the prince's 65th birthday in 2013 while they were on tour in India. Named as India's leading green resort by the World Travel Awards for four consecutive years, it was apparently chosen by Charles because of his love of traditional architecture.

When the queen stayed at the The Majestic Yosemite Hotel in 1983, the rustic but grand granite and timber property was called The Ahwahnee and was most famous for being Stanley Kubrick's inspiration for the hotel in The Shining. Four years after her stay, the hotel was declared a National Historic Landmark.

Prince Charles has been skiing at the same Swiss resort for 40 years, and William and Harry have both vacationed in the Alpine-chic property with their father on many occasions. Harry has also been separately from his father with school friends and has gone paragliding off the mountain on more than one visit.

Not so much of a hotel as a "luxurious tented wilderness resort," each accommodation — as well as the spaces for dining and drinking — is an individual luxury tent glass-fronted with views onto the famous landmark. William and Kate spent the night there during their 2014 tour of Australia.

Mike Tindall has said the cliff-side retreat was the most relaxing place he and wife Zara have ever stayed. Adding, "I did very little. The whole set up is designed to inspire relaxation."

William and Kate checked into the legendary Madison Avenue landmark for a couple of nights at the end of 2014. They weren't the first royalty to stay there, as Princess Diana was a regular, using it every time she was in town.

The Windsor Atlantica Hotel set on Copacabana Beach with views of Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain is where Harry stayed during his first royal tour back in 2012. It's also played host to the England football team during the Rio World Cup, Usain Bolt, and Hillary Clinton.

The young Princess Elizabeth was spending the night in the treehouse hotel during her African tour in 1952 when her father passed away, meaning this is where she became queen. The original aerial retreat was burnt down two years later and rebuilt around a chestnut tree nearby. Her majesty visited the new Treetops in 1983.

When William and Kate undertook their Diamond Jubilee tour of Asia on behalf of the queen in 2012, they followed her lead by staying at one of the most famous hotels in the world. Raffles Hotel Singapore was built in the 1830s in a grand colonial style and was the duke and duchess's base for three nights at the beginning of their tour.

The queen has stayed at Fairmont properties in Alberta and Vancouver, but at the suitably named Royal York in Toronto she was maintaining a tradition started by her parents, King George VI and the queen mother. Her majesty uses elevator nine when she is in residence and unsurprisingly she stays in the royal suite. Prince Harry also visited this year.

Charles and Camilla used the former colonial mansion as their base in 2013 when they attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo. Now a 10-room boutique hotel, it houses a large private art collection.

Harry followed in the footsteps of Presidents Hoover and Roosevelt, John Wayne, Liberace, and his own aunt Princess Anne when he stayed at the grand lakeside property in 2013. No news though on whether he used the in-restaurant bowling alley . . .

The former royal villa at the Hotel Excelsior was built in 1913, and in 1972 the queen stayed in the presidential suite with with husband Prince Philip and their daughter Princess Anne.

Mike Tindall has said the Westcliff is his favorite hotel in the world. He spent several nights there when he was playing for England, adding, "the television pops out of the end of your bed."

The grande dame of NYC has long had royal connections. The queen mother stayed in 1954, and three years later her daughter the queen followed suit. The top floors of the hotel later became the regular residence of the post-abdication Edward VIII and his wife, Wallis. A dozen American presidents have also stayed there and Cole Porter's coffee-stained and cigarette-burnt piano is still played in the restaurant.

When Prince Harry stayed at the Shangri-La Hotel during a brief trip Down Under in 2013, he took advantage of the panoramic views over Sydney Harbour to watch a fireworks display from the roof.

King George V and Queen Mary were the first royals to stay at the suitably opulent property back in 1905, and Prince Charles checked in as recently as 2013, but the hotel got the most attention when William and Kate stayed earlier this year during their tour of India. President Obama was the first head of state to stay after the 2008 terrorist attack on the property, calling the hotel a "symbol of the strength and the resilience of the Indian people."

When William and Harry were in town for their friend Guy Pelly's wedding in 2014, they and their entire party — including their cousins Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie — set up camp in the grand downtown landmark.
