Oops! Lin-Manuel Miranda Forgot He Met Emmy Winner Jharrel Jerome 5 Years Ago

When They See Us star Jharrel Jerome is now an Emmy winner, and Lin-Manuel Miranda totally forgot he had a front row seat to one of his performances years before the 21-year-old actor starred in his first film. Lin-Manuel tweeted on Monday that he thought his first encounter with Jharrel was when he walked the purple carpet at Sunday's Emmy Awards, but Jharrel happily reminded him that they'd actually met before.

"I meet the brilliant @JharrelJerome, who looked SO familiar in @ava's heartbreaking work of art, @WhenTheySeeUs," Lin-Manuel captioned the selfie he took with Jharrel, adding many crying face emoji. "He tells me, 'I don't know if you remember me, but you came to my high school performance of In the Heights, I played Usnavi.'"

Another Twitter user quickly added to the thread by sharing a video of Jharrel practicing for the Broadway play on the day Lin-Manuel went to visit him and his classmates at LaGuardia High School five years ago. In the video, Jharrel is singing as Usnavi de la Vega, the play's narrator and main character, and the smile on Lin-Manuel's face as he sways to the music makes it clear that he was impressed.

Only an Oscar away from being an EGOT award winner, Lin-Manuel is familiar with the incredible feeling of being presented with prestigious awards. So it makes sense that he was more than happy to have met Jharrel, before and after his emotional Emmy win. See the evidence of their first (and second) meetings ahead.
