Whispers about whether or not Dua and Anwar were an item began circling in June 2019, but it wasn't until a month later at the 2019 British Summer Time Hyde Park music festival that we got visual proof that the two were definitely more than friends. Dua had just split from longtime boyfriend Isaac Carew and Anwar had been linked to Kendall Jenner, though both said there was nothing between them.

Dua and Anwar made their first New York Fashion Week appearance together as a couple at the Marc Jacobs spring 2020 runway show, confirming their relationship. They showed up in bright color-coordinated outfits paired with heart-shaped accessories. Earlier that month, their relationship had reached another serious milestone when Dua accompanied Anwar to his grandmother's funeral in the Netherlands.

The loved-up duo walked the red carpet together at the 47th American Music Awards, marking their first red carpet appearance as a couple. The PDA was everywhere in sight, from smooches in front of the cameras to not being able to keep their hands off one another while on the carpet.

On June 14, 2020, the "Don't Start Now" singer took to Instagram to boast about her boyfriend on their one-year anniversary. "We have all these incredible memories and experiences, and if there's something that we want to share together, then OK, that's fun," she told the magazine, referencing the moments she has shared to Instagram. "But at the same time, we're quite private — we'll only show you as much as we want you to see." The "We're Good" singer explained the whole thing has been "a little bit of give and take." "I want to be able to just be happy in this relationship without having other people's opinions," she said.
