"Shadow and Bone" Season 2: Who Are the Cast Dating?

Fans quickly fell for the cast of "Shadow And Bone" when the show first premiered on Netflix in 2021, and now that the fantasy series is back for a second season, there are even more characters to love as four new stars have joined the cast. Lewis Tan has signed on as Tolya Yul-Bataar; Anna Leong Brophy as Tamar Kir-Bataar; Patrick Gibson as Nikolai Lantsov; and Jack Wolfe as Wylan Hendriks. They join original cast members Jessie Mei Li (Alina Starkov), Ben Barnes (General Kirigan), Freddy Carter (Kaz Brekker), Amita Suman (Inej Ghafa), Kit Young (Jesper Fahey), Archie Renaux (Malyen "Mal" Oretsev), Danielle Galligan (Nina Zenik), Sujaya Dasgupta (Zoya Nazyalensky), and Calahan Skogman (Matthias Helvar).

Showrunner and executive producer Eric Heisserer shared a breakdown of what viewers can expect from the upcoming season in an interview with Netflix's Tudum in March, confirming that the new characters will play a big part in the plot. "The most wonderful thing about season two is that we get to advance the story of these characters that we'd left in precarious positions at the end of season one," he explained. "There's a lot of potential for them this season. They have to face the consequences for their actions, and then they get to meet new people along the way. The Grishaverse also expands in this season, both in mythology and in characters."

Leigh Bardugo — who is the author of the book trilogy that the show is based on — also shared how the new characters will shake things up. "We are going to get to see some incredible new characters," she said. "We're going to see characters interacting with each other, questing with each other, fighting and laughing with each other, who we never got to see together in the books — and I think that's a unique thing about this show."

With the cast growing, fans naturally want to learn more about the actors portraying their favorite characters. So to find out who the cast of "Shadow and Bone" season two are dating in real life, keep reading.

Jessie Mei Li

While Li doesn't give much away about her personal life she has opened up in the past about being queer. "I'm a queer person, and I think having…You see queer relationships happen on the screen, but it's not a big deal," she told Digital Spy while discussing the diversity of the series. "They're just characters who clearly are in relationships or whatever. No one talks about it like it's weird or anything, or even that it's a big deal. It's just that, in this world, that's totally fine."

As for whether her character also identifies as queer, Li added: "I mean, I would hope so. Currently, she's got Mal, and she loves Mal. But who knows? Who knows where they're going to go? I would love that. I think it'd be really great for her because it seems right for her as well. She just seems like she could be queer, and she has so much love for many people in the show."

Ben Barnes

Barnes was previously linked to longtime pal Julianne Hough. While neither of them ever confirmed a romantic relationship, they first sparked romance rumors in 2020 when they were photographed together in Los Angeles amid Hough's divorce from ex-husband Brooks Laich. They continued to be spotted together on multiple occasions through Augugust 2022.

In 2023, it's unclear if they were ever an official couple or just friends. Both Hough and Barnes still follow each other on Instagram, proving that romance or not, they're still good pals.

Prior to his rumored relationship with Hough, Barnes was linked to Felicity Jones, Meganne Young, and Tamsin Egerton.

Archie Renaux

Renaux, who plays Mal, has been dating Annie O'Hara since at least 2020. That October, the two welcomed their daughter, Iris. Renaux's girlfriend and daughter, mean the world to him, according to his Instagram, where he often shares sweet photos of them together.

O'Hara and Iris also play a major part in the actor's career, often inspiring him to take on certain roles, like 2022's "Catherine Called Birdy." "Soon as I read @lenadunham script for this I said to Annie you'll love this and so will our daughter Iris when she's old enough!" Renaux wrote on Instagram in September 2022. "(To be fair you will all love this) UK premiere of Catherine called Birdy."

Danielle Galligan

While Galligan appears to be single — or at least keeps her romantic life off social media — she is surrounded by the love of her friends, costars, and family. She honored them in a post for her 30th birthday in December 2022.

"Dirty, thirty & surviving," she captioned a photo of herself holding a bottle of wine on the beach on Instagram at the time. "Thank you to all of ye who pushed me on and dragged up and over this hill. I'd be a shadow of myself without your unwavering love, support and acceptance. Love you 🥹💕."

Calahan Skogman

Skogman was previously linked to creative director Taylor LaShae. In 2021, the two were spotted at New York Fashion Week together, and walking hand-in-hand in Paris in March of the following year. However, both of their Instagram pages are primarily focused on their respective careers, leaving much to the imagination about whether they are still together, or have since parted ways.

Skogman does have one very serious relationship in his life — with costar Danielle Galligan. During an Empire Convention panel in Paris in August 2022, he gushed over his love for her. "She is really precious to me, I would do anything for Danielle," he shared. "I really love her. She's an incredible person, a wonderful actress, she's extraordinarily talented and gracious when you perform with her."

Freddy Carter

Carter met his wife Caroline Ford on the set of Netflix's "Free Rein" in 2017. The two were first romantically linked the following year, and Carter and Ford were officially married in December 2022. "It was amazing," Carter told Tatler of his wedding day. "All the clichés of 'best day of your life,' 'went too fast', 'didn't speak to anyone.'"

Carter and Ford aren't shy to gush over each other on social media. In May 2022, Carter honored his wife in a sweet Instagram post, which read, "Happy Birthday, my darling! ❤️ Thank you for always holding your pose an unnatural length of time while I figure out how my camera works. You're the best."

Amita Suman

Suman was once rumored to be dating Johnny Thackway, a top British model and fitness instructor. However, there is no further information about their relationship, and Suman's social media pages are mostly filled with photos of her costars and her acting adventures.

In December 2018, though, Suman helped Thackway raise money for a good cause by tweeting about his mission to help people experiencing homelessness. "Johnny Thackway is doing a 12hr workout to help raise money for the homeless this X-mas," she wrote alongside a photo of him. "To donate, visit @johnny_thackway insta page and to see his progress. Support and shares would be grately appreciated. Link to just giving page is on his bio. ❤ #helpthehomeless."

Kit Young

Despite his fame, Young has remained extremely private when it comes to his personal life.

There is a certain love in Young's life, though, which is the fans of the show. In an April 2021 interview with Seventeen, Young shared how loyal the fanbase is.

"It's so wonderfully overwhelming. The moment we were announced as the cast before we started shooting, I didn't realize quite how big the fan base was. Suddenly, there was a little bit of pressure for me that I went, 'Okay, I better do my homework and do my job well.' They've been with us throughout from the beginning to today," Young noted. "They do argue with each other a lot. So it's actually quite tricky not to jump in on the argument and go, 'Guys, you don't know yet because you haven't seen it.' But the cast all nerded out together as we were making it and made up our own theories, because we also didn't know how it was gonna work. We've all become fans and I feel like I'm part of the fanbase. I just get to know things before other people."

Patrick Gibson

Gibson was previously in a relationship with model Joanna Kuchta. While not much is known about their romance, including when they broke up, the former pair made plenty of public appearances together from 2017 to 2019. Some of those events included the Warner Music Group and British GQ Summer Party in London, Milan Menswear Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2018/19 in Italy, and the 65th Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

Kuchta's last photo with Gibson on her Instagram is from April 2019, while his is a picture of her from June of that year.

Anna Leong Brophy

Next to nothing is known about Brophy's dating history, but she is in love with her role in "Shadow and Bone" season 2. "I could really relate and, when I auditioned for the role, I really wanted to bring myself to it," she told Country & Townhouse magazine of the role. "So she is, as I play her, very close to myself. I am definitely a bit of a hot head — or have been in the past — and I really relate with this feeling of not quite fitting in."

"You know, with the white side of the family, Asian side of the family – where do you fit? I think you can grow a little bit of a husk of defensiveness or wit around that," she explained. "She maybe is a little bit more pointed in that direction but, especially when I was younger, I've definitely been like, 'I'll take anyone on, I'll take anyone on!' She's also really protective of her brother, and I'm also really protective of my own brother, so I felt like I didn't have to reach too far. Probably the furthest thing away from me is that she's got absolute self confidence. Never doubts herself in a fight. Always backs herself. If she's pursuing a cause, then it's the right cause. Whereas I'm much more likely to be like, 'Oh, ooh, uhh…' Prevaricating. So I do envy her that. She's decisive."

Lewis Tan

Lewis Tan

Tan once dated model Emi Renata Sakamoto. While they were often photographed at events together during their time together, their last appearance was in 2017 at a Marc Jacobs event in Los Angeles. Since their time together, Sakamoto has gotten married to Matteo Veronesi and had a child. She is currently pregnant with her second baby. Tan, meanwhile, hasn't been vocal about his love life following their split.

He does, however, have one leading lady in his life: his mom, Joanne Cassidy, whom he often praises on social media.

"The queen of four crazy boys with fire in the veins, you sacrificed it all. ❤️" he captioned an Instagram post in May 2020 that shows the sweetest mom/son throwback pic.

Jack Wolfe

Wolfe is dating fellow actor Cavan Clarke. The two aren't super vocal about their relationship but aren't shy to share sweet tributes to each other on Instagram on occasion. Most recently, Clarke shared a series of adorable photos of them in honor of Wolfe's birthday in December 2022, writing, "Happy Birthday Jack! Here's some of your best bits. Love you. Loads. ❤️"

The previous year, Clarke shared an even sweeter post, which he captioned: "Happy Birthday to the mythical, magical woodland creature that is Mr Jack Wolfe! You're a wonder and I'm a very lucky boy ❤️ @jacktwolfe."

Sujaya Dasgupta

Like many of her "Shadow & Bone" costars, Dasgupta leaves much to the imagination when it comes to her personal life, but often embraces her family and friends on social media. Dasgupta once spoke to Fault Magazine about how her family supported her dreams to become an actor. "Since an early age I loved to create imaginative worlds and escape to them," she shared. "Sometimes for the joy of playing and sometimes to protect myself, as I was bullied quite a bit when I was young. So it was my happy place. I was a very shy, quiet child preferring to read at a party than to socialize. So when I decided in sixth form that I wanted to go into acting professionally, although it was a little surprising to my family, they were always really supportive from the get-go."

"My parents have always wanted my sisters and I to do what makes us happy and worked so hard to enable us to do that," Dasgupta added. "So I'm very lucky and grateful."
