The film's writer and producer, Bob Gale, came up with the concept for the film after he stumbled upon his dad's high school yearbook and wondered if they would have been friends if they had gone to school together.

Crispin, who played George McFly in the first film, showed up to one of his first days of filming with the sides of his head shaved. The film's hair and makeup team had no choice but to give him a combover look that covered his unexpected haircut.

It's no secret that actor Eric Stoltz filmed the role of Marty McFly for about nine weeks before being fired. They replaced him with the star they wanted all along — Michael J. Fox — but before everything worked out, Eric caused a bit of tension on set. During the scene where Marty pushes Biff in the cafeteria, Eric did it with such force that Thomas had to tell him that he would react just as realistically if he backed off. Eric continued to push Thomas hard, and despite him warning him more than once, Thomas ended up with bruises on his chest.

Lea, who played Lorraine McFly in the films, didn't get along with Michael after he first took over the role of Marty from Eric. Lea said that she was "cranky" and "quite snobby" to Michael because Eric was her friend and she was upset that he had gotten fired.

Before production even began, Eric demanded that the entire cast and crew call him Marty at all times, with the exception of Lea, whom he had worked with before. He would wear Marty's clothes before and after work and he refused to answer to Eric.

Before any story ideas were developed, writer Bob Gale had just this title in mind and nothing else.

Concerned that people wouldn't want to see a movie with the word "future" in it, a film executive tried to get the writers to change the name to Spaceman From Pluto. Thankfully, that never happened.

A prefame Billy, who is best-known for his role as Cal in Titanic, is one of Biff's minions. He can be seen in a few scenes throughout the movie, including the soda fountain fight scene and the car chase around downtown Hill Valley.
