Netflix's Latest True-Crime Doc Explores the Rise and Fall of a Vegan-Cuisine Queen

Fugitives." follows how celebrity restaurateur Sarma Melngailis went from queen of vegan cuisine to runaway fugitive after meeting a man who conned her into believing he could make all her dreams come true — but only if she did everything he asked her to do. Think: "The Tinder Swindler" but on a much, much bigger scale. The four-part documentary has everything from immortal dogs to meat suits (and no, we're not talking about Lady Gaga's 2010 MTV VMAs outfit). What Is "Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives." About?

Netflix's latest documentary series dives deep into the rise and fall of celebrity restaurateur Sarma Melngailis, who was once known as the queen of vegan cuisine, thanks to her Pure Food and Wine restaurant in New York. After getting involved with a man named Shane Fox on Twitter in 2011, however, her life took a turn for the worse. Melngailis began draining her restaurant's funds and funneling the money to Fox after he conned her into believing he could make her dog immortal and help her expand her food empire.

Fast-forward a few years later, and Fox and Melngailis are married and on the run after stealing almost $2 million from the restaurant and its staff. They're eventually caught at a Tennessee motel after — wait for it — Fox, whose real name is Anthony Strangis, orders a pizza from Domino's. Yep, this actually happened in real life.
