John Legend left it all on the stage at the Billboard Music Awards. During Wednesday night's show, the EGOT winner performed the song "Never Break" from his latest album, Bigger Love, and it was an emotional one for all viewers. "This is for Chrissy," Legend said as he began. The song was initially written in 2019, but as Legend has noted in interviews, the lyrics about perseverance and human strength took on a new meaning when the album was released in June of this year. "We will never break, we will never break / Built on a foundation, stronger than the pain / We will never break, as the water rises and the mountains shake / Our love will remain," Legend sang.
Wednesday's ceremony marks the first appearance for Legend since he and wife Chrissy Teigen shared the heartbreaking news that they'd lost their third baby halfway through her pregnancy. "We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we've never felt before," Teigen wrote on social media on Sept. 30. "On this darkest of days, we will grieve, we will cry our eyes out. But we will hug and love each other harder and get through it."
Legend's BBMAs performance is a testament to their strength, as well as the strength of others who have endured such pain. Watch "Never Break" above.
