Common and Ne-Yo Have Joined The Wiz's Live Production!
The call sheet for The Wiz Live! is filling up quickly. This week, NBC chairman announced three new performers for the live musical at the Summer TCA, including Common and Ne-Yo. We now know who's the Tin Man and the Scarecrow, in addition to the recently announced Shanice Williams — who had an extremely endearing response to the news — as Dorothy. Meanwhile, an Orange Is the New Black star and a Glee star have also joined the cast. There are still plenty of roles to be had, but let's take a look at who has been cast so far for the Dec. 3 show.
Shanice Williams as Dorothy
Williams is the newest addition to the cast. The 18-year-old New Jersey girl will make her onscreen debut as Dorothy, the role Stephanie Mills originated on the stage and Diana Ross took on in the 1978 film.
Queen Latifah as The Wiz
Queen Latifah will play the mysterious wizard known as The Wiz. The role is traditionally played by a male — Richard Pryor famously played him in the movie — so this will be an interesting change.
Mary J. Blige as Evillene
Blige is taking on the role of Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West.
David Alan Grier as the Cowardly Lion
Tony- and Grammy-nominated performer Grier has been cast as the Cowardly Lion, who accompanies Dorothy to the Emerald City.
Stephanie Mills as Auntie Em
Mills, aka the original Dorothy, is returning to the production to play Auntie Em.
Amber Riley as Addaperle, the Good Witch of the North
We already know that Riley has singing chops from her time on Glee, so it should be interesting to see her as Addaperle!
Uzo Aduba as Glinda, the Good Witch of the South
Orange Is the New Black's Uzo Aduba will appear as Glinda, the witch who finally points Dorothy in the direction of home.
Elijah Kelley as the Scarecrow
It was announced at Summer TCA that Kelley, who costarred in Hairspray with Queen Latifah, will play the Scarecrow. Michael Jackson originated the role in the film.
Common as the Gatekeeper
NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said at TCA that Common would be playing the "nonsinging, comedic role of the gatekeeper to Oz."
Ne-Yo as the Tin-Man
Greenblatt also announced R&B star Ne-Yo as the Tin Man.
