Their name alone — MisterWives — is a play on the Mormon term "sister wives" and pokes fun at the fact that Mandy Lee is the band's only female member. About the gender-bending name, Lee has said, "Instead of a man marrying a bunch of women and them all becoming friends, we reversed the genders. I've run into a few Mormons while on tour who were not happy about [it]."
Along with their female-focused moniker, the band's songs are geared toward being yourself, bucking the trends, and not adhering to society's rules or expectations. Just like No Doubt's iconic "Just a Girl" back in 1995, hearing Lee croon lyrics like "This is my body / And you don't have a say / This is my own life / Not growing up to be a trophy wife," on "Not Your Way" is a refreshing, exciting change of pace from today's popular radio hits.
