POPSUGAR: I'm so happy to be able to talk to you! I really love the new album. What was the writing process like this time around since you spent so much time on the road?
Kip Moore: It was a lot more organic in the sense that most of these songs I came up with the guitar riff during soundcheck, and I would let those songs kind of marinate for a while to start off. I would put my earphones on at night and I would listen to the guitar riffs, I would hum different melodies over the riffs, and then I would wait for a while for the lyric to come to me. I wouldn't force it.
PS: You've said you wrote "I'm to Blame" to capture who you are. Is that a standout song on the album for you?
KM: That song was more about being pissed off — being pissed off about how I feel nobody has a backbone these days. Everybody's always wanting something to blame on somebody else, nobody wants to own up to anything. And I always think it's kind of fearless in my approach to . . . I'm not fearless on the road, but I'm fearless in taking risks. And when you take a risk, there's a good chance that the wrong thing is going to happen first, before you can get to the right one. That's all I meant by that, and I just was kind of pissed off.
PS: The blue suits in that music video are amazing, by the way. Any plans to break that out at parties?
KM: No, no, I don't. I don't have any plans to right now, but I woke up with that idea and I called my director and I said, "This is what we're going to do."
PS: So is there a song that's become your favorite on the album, or is that changing all the time?
KM: It changes a lot. "That Was Us" has been my favorite so far. It's such a storyteller song, and it paints such a picture.
PS: Let's talk about love for a second. Do you think it's easier to write about love or heartbreak?
KM: I would say, for me, it's easier to write about the heartache of being trapped — trapped in your own kind of desperation of being out of that place that you're in.
PS: Do you have a favorite country love song?
KM: Favorite country love song? Merle Haggard, "A Place to Fall Apart."
