The Full Suspect List For "Uber A" on Pretty Little Liars

It's a whole new era on Pretty Little Liars, and there's already so much to keep track of. We've leapt five years into the future, and there's a new, terrifying "big bad" on the loose. But that's not all. Charlotte has been murdered, creating a whole new mystery and a whole new list of suspects. The strangest part is, this new villain — this "Uber A," if you will — doesn't seem to know who did it. There's a lot to mull over, but perhaps the biggest question is, who's the new villain that's tormenting the gang? Keep reading to see our top suspects.

01
Spencer Hastings
Freeform

Spencer Hastings

  • Why She's Guilty: When you really boil everything down, Spencer is the smartest, most cunning member of the gang. She's dealt with a lot of personal issues, including temporary insanity. It's not a stretch that she'd be tormenting her friends after all this time. She also wrote that crazy Criminology paper with details that mirror the murder of Charlotte.
  • Why She's Innocent: Spencer's got a lot going on with her mom's campaign, and she's seemed pretty preoccupied by it. Also, now that she's hooking up with Caleb, could she really hide her evildoings from such a tech-savvy guy?
02
Ezra Fitz
Freeform

Ezra Fitz

  • Why He's Guilty: Ezra is clearly distraught, consumed by grief, and filled with anger. We don't know exactly where he was around the time Charlotte was killed. We know he explodes at the gang when they tried to talk to him about it. Plus, Ezra has been involved in mischievious activities before. Could he be picking up where he left off?
  • Why He's Innocent: While Ezra has been shady in the past, he never actually involved himself in the whole "A" ordeal. And he might be angry, but he'd absolutely be misplacing his rage if he took his frustration out on Charlotte. It seems more like poor timing. Plus, his nine iron golf club isn't even missing!
03
Alison DiLaurentis
Freeform

Alison DiLaurentis

  • Why She's Guilty: They often say the person closest to the victim is the most likely suspect, and no one was closer to Charlotte than Alison. We know Ali is a masterful liar and manipulator. Maybe she's playing one last game with the gang. Maybe she's faking all this grief and sadness to deflect suspicion.
  • Why She's Innocent: Why would Ali push so hard to get Charlotte released, only to turn around and kill her? Ali truly seems close to Charlotte, and it seems strange that she'd stick around Rosewood for five years, just to pull off a murder.
04
Byron Montgomery
Freeform

Byron Montgomery

  • Why He's Guilty: Byron is definitely the top suspect in the most recent episode. He's making shifty phone calls, his nine iron golf club is missing from his set, and he has something he wants to tell Aria.
  • Why He's Innocent: Everything seems together perfectly, almost too perfectly. We have to remember that quite often, the most damning evidence could just be a big misunderstanding. How much can we really implicate Byron?
05
Mona Vanderwaal
Freeform

Mona Vanderwaal

  • Why She's Guilty: As Mona tells Spencer in the premiere, she's still very affected by the dollhouse, and she still has nightmares. She has plenty of reasons to want Charlotte dead. Plus, she's been on the "A" team before.
  • Why She's Innocent: Now that she's getting into politics herself, it's entirely possible Mona doesn't have the time to be a technologically advanced supervillain. Plus, she really seems to have changed so much since she first went crazy, right?
06
Aria Montgomery
Freeform

Aria Montgomery

  • Why She's Guilty: Aria is the only person to vote against Charlotte's release. She even says she'd be afraid for her safety if Charlotte was released. Furthermore Aria, like Ezra, is actually not totally accounted for the night of Charlotte's murder. We can place her here and there based on her testimony, hotel security tapes, etc. But do we really know for sure? Once upon a time, we really thought this one was "A."
  • Why She's Innocent: Aria seems just as terrified of Ezra as the rest of the crew. Plus, hotel footage does place her back in the hotel before Charlotte's death.
07
Caleb Rivers
Freeform

Caleb Rivers

  • Why He's Guilty: Caleb has always been a strong contender for "A" because of his technological savvy and general shadiness. Given the fact that he's romantically involved with Spencer, he's more tangled in this web than ever. It's definitely interesting that he's managed to stay so involved with everyone else, isn't it?
  • Why He's Innocent: Even after all this time, Caleb's main mission seems to be protecting Hanna, Spencer, and everyone else. It directly conflicts with the motives of this new villain.
08
Sara Harvey
Freeform

Sara Harvey

  • Why She's Guilty: Sara Harvey was Red Coat and The Black Widow. She was involved with everything the whole time. Plus, Emily and her friends are responsible for her new, damaged, fragile state. Her sudden reappearance in Rosewood is telling. Of course Sara would want revenge. Wouldn't you?
  • Why She's Innocent: As the police said, Sara is far too feeble to do any damage on her own. They even eliminated her as a murder suspect. So, unless Sara has help, it's pretty hard for her to wreak much havoc.
09
Lucas Gottesman
Freeform

Lucas Gottesman

  • Why He's Guilty: Lucas is far and away one of the most suspicious Rosewood residents. He has an apartment right in the center of town. He's been know to join forces with Jenna Marshall, to befriend Mona, and to conspire against Ali. What better way to make her pay than to kill the person she loves most?
  • Why He's Innocent: He's so busy being a multimillionaire and meek-shall-inherit-the-earth badass, it seems kind of silly that he'd bother regressing back to high school. Plus, he's always had a thing for Hanna, so much so that he's willing to be her alibi.
10
Hanna Marin
Freeform

Hanna Marin

  • Why She's Guilty: All of the drama is just getting started, and Hanna is smack dab in the center of it. She deletes the hotel's security footage, and she seems awfully eager to get a solid alibi for the night of Charlotte's murder. She even begs Lucas to do it for her.
  • Why She's Innocent: It's more likely Hanna just wants to avoid trouble again, and she's just working to cover her ass. The tragic part is that Hanna always seems to make the wrong decision under pleasure, every single time. This new crime is a testament to that.
11
Toby Cavanaugh
Freeform

Toby Cavanaugh

  • Why He's Guilty: Don't forget, Toby was on the "A" team for a little bit. Could he be holding some sort of leftover grudge against the squad? Is he bitter that everyone left him behind in Rosewood? It's entirely possible.
  • Why He's Innocent: Toby really doesn't seem to fit the bill. He's still an officer at Rosewood PD, and he's very focused on locking down his girlfriend and building her a house. It's pretty clear he's moved on.
12
Emily Fields
Freeform

Emily Fields

  • Why She's Guilty: Of all the main members of the gang, Emily has definitely fared the worst. She dropped out of college, she's scrambling for cash — even donating her eggs for extra money — and she's mourning the loss of her father. Under that kind of pressure, there's no telling what she might do.
  • Why She's Innocent: Emily's dealing with so many personal issues, it seems entirely unlikely that she'd have time to terrorize her friends. Plus, she'd kind of need money to do all of the things this new villain does. Finally, there's something telling about her utter unwillingness to help the girls in their mischief.
