There's Still Hope For These Dead Game of Thrones Characters — in the Books

The death count on Game of Thrones is easily one of the show's most talked-about aspects, especially since the HBO series doesn't shy away from killing off characters who are still alive and well in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels. The differences between the show and books are really adding up now that Game of Thrones is moving past where the novels left off, and in the season six premiere alone, we see the death of two characters who aren't dead in the books. Here's the rundown on who else could live on in Martin's remaining novels despite being dead on the show.

Myrcella Baratheon
HBO

Myrcella Baratheon

How she dies on the show: Myrcella is poisoned by Ellaria Sand and dies in Jaime's arms, shortly after admitting that she knows he's her real father.

Where she's last seen in the books: In A Feast for Crows, Myrcella loses an ear in a fight when Arianne Martell (Prince Doran's daughter) attempts to kidnap her, but she's still alive and en route back to King's Landing from Dorne.

Stannis Baratheon
HBO

Stannis Baratheon

How he dies on the show: After battling Roose Bolton's army at Winterfell, Brienne of Tarth comes upon Stannis resting beneath a tree and kills him to avenge his brother Renly's death.

Where he's last seen in the books: In A Dance With Dragons, Jon receives a letter from Ramsay Bolton claiming that Stannis has died in battle at Winterfell (the same battle as what we see on the show), but his death is not confirmed, and Jon doubts the veracity of the letter.

Doran Martell
HBO

Doran Martell

How he dies on the show: In the season six premiere, Doran is murdered by the power-hungry Ellaria Sand, who is seeking vengeance for Oberyn Martell's death.

Where he's last seen in the books: In A Dance With Dragons, Prince Doran is still reigning over Sunspear, unharmed.

Trystane Martell
HBO

Trystane Martell

How he dies on the show: After Ellaria Sand murders his father, Doran, the Sand Snakes move in on Trystane and brutally kill him by shoving a sword right through his head.

Where he's last seen in the books: Trystane is still alive and well in Dorne in A Dance With Dragons.

Jon Snow
HBO

Jon Snow

How he dies on the show: In a mutiny led by Alliser Thorne, Jon Snow is brutally murdered when certain members of the Night's Watch take turns stabbing him, believing him to be a traitor. Though there's still hope that he could be revived, for now Jon is pretty dead.

Where he's last seen in the books: As in the show, Jon is stabbed four times by members of the Night's Watch but is never confirmed to be dead. His fate won't be revealed until the release of The Winds of Winter.

Ser Barristan Selmy
HBO

Ser Barristan Selmy

How he dies on the show: Ser Barristan is fatally stabbed several times during a terrorist raid by the Sons of the Harpy in season five.

Where he's last seen in the books: After Daenerys flees Mereen with Drogon, Ser Barristan takes on the role of Hand of the Queen and conspires to take down Hizdahr zo Loraq (who is also still alive in the books and eager to assume Dany's power).

Shireen Baratheon
HBO

Shireen Baratheon

How she dies on the show: In one of Game of Thrones' most horrifying moments, Shireen is burned at the stake as a sacrifice to the Lord of Light upon Melisandre's suggestion.

Where she's last seen in the books: In A Dance With Dragons, Shireen is still alive and at Castle Black with her mother.

Mance Rayder
HBO

Mance Rayder

How he dies on the show: After being kept prisoner at Castle Black, Mance chooses to be burned at the stake rather than kneel to Stannis.

Where he's last seen in the books: In a similar fashion to what happens on the show, Mance is burned alive in A Dance With Dragons, but there's a twist. As it turns out, it only appears that Mance is killed, because Melisandre has used magic to make Rattleshirt look like Mance, and it's actually Rattleshirt who is burned at the stake. In turn, Mance has been glamoured to look like Rattleshirt. Mance is last seen at Winterfell, where he's been sent to stop Ramsay's wedding at Jon's urging. (In the book, Jon mistakenly believes that Ramsay is set to marry Arya, when in reality he's marrying a different girl who is posing as Arya, and the real Arya is in Braavos.)

Pyp and Grenn
HBO

Pyp and Grenn

How they die on the show: Pyp and Grenn, who are two of Jon's best friends in the Night's Watch, meet their end in season four during the epic battle at Castle Black against Mance Rayder and his wilding army (the same raid in which Ygritte is killed.)

Where they're last seen in the books: Pyp and Grenn are still alive and at Castle Black, though their friendship with Jon has become strained since he was instated as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.

Hizdahr zo Loraq
HBO

Hizdahr zo Loraq

How he dies on the show: Hizahr, to whom Dany becomes engaged, is murdered by the Sons of the Harpy in the raid on the fighting pits in season five.

Where he's last seen in the books: After Dany's disappearance, Hizdahr tries to assert himself as the ruler of Mereen, but he's stopped by Grey Worm and Ser Barristan, who eventually capture him.

Jojen Reed
HBO

Jojen Reed

How he dies on the show: En route to the three-eyed raven with Bran, Hodor, and Meera, Jojen is stabbed by a wight. Meera then slits his throat to put him out of his misery, and a child of the forest uses magic on his body to prevent him from coming back as a wight.

Where he's last seen in the books: Jojen also suffers a wight attack in A Dance With Dragons, but his injuries aren't fatal. However, he does become weak and depressed, and there are implications that his greendreams are foreshadowing his imminent death.

Ser Meryn Trant
HBO

Ser Meryn Trant

How he dies on the show: In season five, Ser Meryn is sent to Braavos, where he is recognized by Arya. Disguised with a different face, Arya meets Ser Meryn in a brothel, where she knows he likes to abuse young girls. Once alone with him, Arya reveals her true face and stabs him in the eyes before slitting his throat.

Where he's last seen in the books: In the novels, Ser Meryn is never sent to Braavos and remains at the Red Keep, often guarding the apartments of the Hand of the King.
