Angela Lansbury Will Return to Her Disney Roots in the Upcoming Mary Poppins Sequel

Disney is in the process of making a sequel to Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Returns, and a few of the film's biggest stars have already been announced. Into the Woods director Rob Marshall will take charge of the new story, which sees Mary Poppins traveling to Depression-era London to help a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, as well as Michael's children, who desperately need her after they suffer a personal tragedy. Between Mary's magical skills and her new friend Jack, the Bankses will once again find happiness in their lives. Sounds pretty great, right? The movie doesn't come out until Dec. 25, 2018, so in the meantime, check out everyone who's been cast so far.

Emily Blunt

The Girl on the Train actress will step into Julie Andrews's shoes to play the title role, Mary Poppins.

Lin-Manuel Miranda

Now that his run in Broadway's Hamilton has come to a close, Miranda will break into film with a role in the sequel as a lamplighter. His character will team up with Mary to help her bring joy back to the Banks family, and we have a feeling he'll be the perfect replacement for Bert.

Meryl Streep

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Streep is in serious talks to play Topsy, Mary's cousin, which would make Mary Poppins Returns the third movie she's costarred in with Blunt. Not much else is known about her role, but it's safe to assume that Streep is the perfect choice (she's the perfect choice for any role, to be honest).

Angela Lansbury

Longtime Disney alum Angela Lansbury — who starred in Bedknobs and Broomsticks and voiced Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast — is returning to the fold! The Tony and Academy Award-winning actress has joined the sequel as the Balloon Lady, who you might remember from PL Travers' Mary Poppins children's books.

Colin Firth

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Firth will join the cast as William Weatherall Wilkins, the president of the Fidelity Fiduciary Bank.

Ben Whishaw

You probably know Ben Whishaw best for playing Q in the most recent James Bond movies, but prepare to see the actor in a different light. According to THR, Whishaw is reportedly in negotiations to take on the role of a grown-up Michael Banks. His character will suffer the loss that reunites him with his older sister, Jane, and Mary Poppins (Blunt).

Emily Mortimer

Say hello to Jane Banks! Emily Mortimer, who you might recognize from The Newsroom or the upcoming film The Sense of an Ending, will play Michael's grown-up sister according to The Hollywood Reporter.
