6 Questions We Still Have About The Night Of

While The Night Of left us on the edge of our sets for a suspenseful eight episodes, the crime drama has wrapped up with the airing of its intense finale. Though much of it was satisfying for viewers who stuck to the bitter end, there are still some loose threads hanging. Since the show's a miniseries, it's unlikely that any burning questions we have will be answered in another season with the same characters. But hey, it doesn't hurt to ask! Here are a few things we're still wondering about.

Why did Freddy leak the DVD of Chandra and Naz kissing to John Stone?

Why did Freddy leak the DVD of Chandra and Naz kissing to John Stone?

Freddy becomes something of a mentor and protector to Naz at Rikers. Despite their intellectual conversations about novels, he also keeps Naz around to facilitate criminal activity, like drug smuggling. So when Freddy sends Stone a DVD featuring security camera footage of Chandra and Naz's very unethical kiss, we have to wonder about his motives. Is he trying to help Naz by forcing a mistrial? Or is he trying to expose Naz to keep him behind bars longer?

Who was the other murder victim we saw?
HBO

Who was the other murder victim we saw?

Episode seven opens with Detective Box at a crime scene where a woman has been murdered. He mentions how similar the whole thing is to Andrea's case, but it's never really revisited. Who is the victim, and is she of any other significance at all? Some viewers believe she was the prostitute that Stone had been sleeping with, while others think there's not much more importance to the scene.

03
What happens to Ray Halle?
HBO

What happens to Ray Halle?

The killer isn't Naz after all — or Andrea's stepfather, or Duane Reade, or the hearse guy, or any other popular suspect. Box and DA Weiss strongly believe it's Ray Halle, and have a ton of incriminating evidence against him. But what now? Will they actually catch him? Will he go to prison? What's his sentence? Viewers invested in the show's murder-mystery aspect are dying to know.

What's up with Stone and the cat?
HBO

What's up with Stone and the cat?

Stone takes in Andrea's poor cat after investigating her place. One problem: he's allergic. After a lot of back and forth between a shelter and Stone's home, plus some unconventional care methods, the cat happily takes residence with Stone at the end of the finale. But what's the deal? Is Stone not actually that allergic to cats? Does the cat help with his eczema at all? Or is he just fighting through the discomfort because the cat grows to be so important to him?

Chandra, girl, why?!
HBO

Chandra, girl, why?!

Naz's lawyer Chandra pulls off some pretty great courtroom feats during the trial, including raising reasonable doubt while questioning the main suspects. However, she also makes some strange missteps along the way, like kissing Naz, smuggling drugs into jail for him, and calling him to the stand when the evidence seems stacked in their favor. Though Naz is ultimately released, Chandra is left unemployed due to the kiss, with a tarnished law rep and probably some guilt for her actions. Where does she go from there? Also, just why?

06
What's next for Naz?
HBO

What's next for Naz?

For the duration of the show, Naz is adamant that he didn't kill Andrea, or that he genuinely doesn't remember. He's finally released from jail after the jury reaches a deadlock and Weiss declines a retrial. However, even with his freedom, Naz has difficulty adjusting back to his old life. His relationships with his mother and friends are damaged, people in his neighborhood can't stop staring and judging, and he's still doing the drugs he got hooked on behind bars.

Tensions are so high during the finale that it wouldn't have been surprising if Naz had met some kind of grisly fate — another arrest, death, or something similar. In a way, he still got both. His habits and reputation from being locked up are still around, and his old self is seemingly long gone. Now that he's free, how will he cope with all the changes?
