The only trope more popular in teen movies than "overthrow the social status quo" is "make a mean bet that goes wrong when someone catches feelings." That's what happens in "She's All That," a loose "Pygmalion" retelling with the most deliciously '90s backdrop you could ask for. Zack is the school golden boy: popular, jock, and valedictorian. After getting dumped by his girlfriend so that she can pursue a reality-TV star, Zack agrees to a bet with his slimy best friend: that he can make over anyone into prom queen, even awkward, artsy Laney. Although Laney is wary of his offered friendship at first, they quickly grow closer and help each other break out of their social roles — but that bet is still looming over everything.
