10 Novels That Will Have Harry Potter Fans Like, "Accio Books"

The seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series came out over 11 years ago, and we still feel like we have a Basilisk fang-shaped hole in our hearts. It's not hyperbolic to say that J.K. Rowling's epic fantasy series shaped an entire generation. Who else remembers going to midnight book release parties at Barnes and Noble? How about forcing your parents to buy multiple copies of the new book (otherwise you would have to share with your siblings)? Same.

While we can't recreate the experience of reading Harry Potter for the first time, you can get lost in a fantastical world thanks to these 10 books. Friendship, adventures, and, of course, magic abound.

01

Mare is a Red, but through a twist of fate becomes embroiled in the Silver court . . . posing as a Silver by the King's order. Betrayal, romance, deceit, and heartbreak follow Mare in this deftly-woven series. The fourth and final book in the series, War Storm, will be released on May 15.

02
Graceling

Graceling

The first book in Kristen Cashore's Graceling Realm series follows Katsa. She lives in a world where select people are born with a Grace, AKA a special talent, and hers is killing. Her uncle, the king, forces her to use her Grace to keep his people in line. But in true coming-of-age fashion, Katsa begins a journey that will change everything she knows about herself and her kingdom. The second and third novels in the series follow different characters, but take place within the same universe.

03
Throne of Glass

Throne of Glass

Throne of Glass is the first book in an epic series. Celaena Sardothien is an extremely skilled assassin who has to compete in a dangerous competition against other assassins to win her freedom. But when her competition starts turning up dead, she begins to realize there's something wild and dark at play. And that's only book one!

Let us tell you, this series will take you on a wild, magical, breathtaking, heartbreaking ride. One thing Sarah J. Maas does extremely well is creating strong female protagonists that evolve and change over the course of the series. Plus the world-building is exquisite. Six books in the series are currently released; book seven is awaiting a release date.

04
The Night Circus

The Night Circus

There's a dreamlike quality to this fantasy novel by Erin Morgenstern. The Night Circus follows Celia and Marco, two young magicians who are destined to duel to the death, but instead begin to fall in love. Intertwined with their fates is the Le Cirque des Rêves, a circus that appears without warning, and only at night. This tale of star-crossed lovers will stay with you long after you've finished reading the final page.

05
The Last Namsara

The Last Namsara

One word: dragons. Asha is the daughter of the king of Firgaard, and she's also the kingdom's fiercest dragon slayer. But that doesn't translate into power. She's betrothed to a cruel man, and forced to do her father's bidding. When she's given the opportunity to earn her freedom by killing the most feared dragon of all, she sets upon a path that will open her eyes to what's really going on. Kristen Ciccarelli's debut novel The Last Namsara is a stunning, sweeping fantasy about the battle between good and evil — both in the world, and in ourselves.

06
Neverwhere

Neverwhere

Neverwhere is an urban fantasy novel by Neil Gaiman, published in 1997. Rich, visual writing compel this story of Richard Mayhew, a good-hearted businessman who winds up in the dangerous, magical underworld of London after stopping to help a girl on the streets. That girl turns out to be a noblewoman, and she's on a quest to avenge the murder of her family. And, naturally, the fate of the world hangs in the balance. It's creepy, it's whimsical, and it's perfect if you need to escape from vampires and werewolves that are prevalent in other fantasy novels.

07
An Ember in the Ashes

An Ember in the Ashes

Sabaa Tahir's An Ember In The Ashes series takes place in a world ruled by a tyrannical Emperor. Elias is a soldier, groomed to follow orders, but secretly questioning his loyalty to the empire. Laia is part of the lower class who becomes a spy in order to free her brother, who has been imprisoned for treason. When their paths cross, they embark on a journey neither could have predicted. Each character in the book has to fight their personal battles in addition to, well, actual battles. It explores themes of courage, what it means to be free, and the importance of finding hope, even when all seems lost.

08
The Tethered Mage

The Tethered Mage

The Tethered Mage is the first novel in Melissa Caruso's debut series, Swords and Fire. The story takes place in the Raverren Empire, where people born with magic are forced to join the empire's army. Zaira possesses strong magic, and has been hiding on the streets to avoid conscription. A chance encounter with Lady Amalia Cornaro, heir to the Raverren throne, has consequences neither could imagine. Intricate world-building, nuanced characters, political intrigue, and not one, but two strong female make this series a must-read. Book two in the series, The Defiant Heir, will be released on April 24.

09
The Queen of the Tearling

The Queen of the Tearling

Emma Watson is set to star in the film adaptation of The Queen of the Tearling, but that's not the reason this book makes the list. No, that would be the epic battle between good and evil. Princess Kelsea Raleigh Glynn must use her magic to defeat a dark sorceress and take back her throne. And though it feels like it takes place in Medieval times, the story is actually set in the future after an event destroys all modern technology. There are three books in the series.

10
Sabriel

Sabriel

Sabriel, a classic novel by Garth Nix, is a must-read for any fantasy aficionado. It tells the tale of Sabriel, a young woman who lives in a fictional world divided by a wall. Old Kingdom, north of the wall, has magic. Like, the kind of magic that reanimates corpses. Ancelstierre, the kingdom to the south, does not have magic. When her father, the only one who has the power to defeat the aforementioned reanimated corpses, goes missing, Sabriel embarks on a quest to find him, confront a dangerous evil, and face her destiny. (Sound familiar?)
