The Trailer For Frozen 2 Left Us With a LOT of Questions β€” Here Are Our Theories

We finally have the official trailer for Frozen 2 (more than three years after the film was first announced in 2015), and it looks amazing! Our favorite Arendellians are back in action, and from the look of the footage, they're in for an intense ride. We don't have much in the way of details about the movie's plot, but what we do know is that our formidable Snow Queen Elsa and her sister Princess Anna will embark on an adventure to the Great Unknown to save their kingdom. Of course, they're bringing Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven along with them, and it looks like they'll be needing all the help they can get!

But with the release of the trailer comes more questions than answers. Why is Elsa doing her own version of a Rocky Balboa training montage against the ocean? Who are those two kids playing in leaves in the forest? And what happened in the past that will explain it all??

While we probably won't be getting answers right away, we do have some ideas. Check out our theories on what we could be seeing when Frozen 2 hits theaters on Nov. 22.

Why Is Elsa Battling With the Sea?
Disney

Why Is Elsa Battling With the Sea?

Elsa sets off both trailers by going toe-to-toe with a raging sea. There are a few ways this could been seen, with one such explanation being that this is a sort of training session. The queen could be working to see how far she can take her powers, since she's going against a literal force of nature. While Elsa gets bowled over pretty thoroughly in the clip, the scene shows a determination that alludes to preparing for a bigger battle. Sure, Elsa could just want to master her abilities, but it's more likely that something has sparked this desire to conquer another element.

Another explanation could be that Elsa is attempting to conquer the sea to get across it. She's obviously determined to get past it, so why wouldn't she be using it to get somewhere else? Maybe the water is blocking her from getting to someone who needs her help, like her sister or Olaf?

Disney

Mid water-fighting, Elsa falls underwater where she encounters a blue-eyed horse made entirely of water, which appears in a flash of lightning before disappearing right before her eyes. The synopsis reveals that the horse is actually Nokk, "a mythical water spirit that takes the form of a horse and uses the power of the ocean to guard the secrets of the forest."

Typically Nokk serves as a sort of siren in the Germanic legends it originates from (how like Disney to use a dark fairy tale), luring folks to their deaths rather than being a guide, as Nokk seems to be for Elsa in the Frozen 2 trailer. But, we won't actually know if the magical entity is a friend or foe to our Queen until the movie actually premieres.

What Secrets Does the Past Hold?

What Secrets Does the Past Hold?

Pabbie (voiced by CiarΓ‘n Hinds) appears to explain the journey at the core of Frozen 2. "The past is not what it seems. You must find the truth," he tells Elsa. "Go north across the enchanted lands and into the unknown, but be careful. We have always feared Elsa's powers were too much for this world, now we must hope they are enough."

Pabbie is the rock troll who helped Elsa and Anna's parents when Elsa was a child, so when he says "we," he's most likely referring to the late king and queen of Arendelle. But he's mysteriously vague about what it means when he says the past isn't what it seems. Is there more to the story behind Elsa's powers? And how does it connect to what's going on in Arendelle in the present?

04
Disney

As Pabbie explains to Elsa and Anna that the former's powers will have to be enough to save them all, an image from Elsa's childhood flashes by. It's a young Elsa in bed (old enough to be around the time she hurt Anna and refused to leave her room afterward) with her mother at the window, staring out at the Northern Lights.

Bear with us, because this is where the theory gets a little wild: what if Elsa wasn't the only royal to have powers? What one or both of her parents had abilities and that's why they were so concerned when hers seemed so out of control? It seems far-fetched, but there's definitely a connection between Elsa's parents and her abilities! And since the past isn't what it seems like, maybe we'll be learning a lot more about Elsa and Anna's parents this go around.

What Are the Mysterious Diamonds Appearing in the Sky?

What Are the Mysterious Diamonds Appearing in the Sky?

Elsa is dancing with ice-made images of various animals (it totally looks like this will be one of our new musical moments), including a horse we can assume is Nokk and outlines of giants rock monsters similar to the snow giant she made in Frozen. She chases these icy visions to an ice cliff where they disappear in a fashion similar to a will-'o'-the-wisp and β€” seemingly involuntarily β€” she releases a burst of energy that creates mystical runes in the dark night sky. The view zooms out to show that the runes appear all over the kingdom, like Elsa's magic has burst out into the sky.

Disney

Anna looks truly alarmed by their appearance, so it's safe to assume that this has never happened before. Because the diamond runes come from Elsa, they're most likely ice in nature, but they shine in various colors, adding to their mystique. What are they and why did Elsa generate them?

It's worth noting that these diamonds appear in the teaser poster for Frozen 2 as well. They connect to make a large snowflake, and just like in the trailer, they each have different designs. Are they sentient? Since it looks like Elsa didn't purposely create them, are they a sign of her losing control of her powers again or a manifestation of her growing stronger? We have a feeling it's a little of both.

And although the scene comes around after Elsa and Anna's conversation with Pabbie in the trailer, we can bet that the runes pop up in Arendelle before the sisters wind up in the forest and are part of the reason they're there in the first place.

What Is Going on With the Forest?

What Is Going on With the Forest?

A magical fire dances through the forest and startles people into running away. It looks like the people in question are the folks of Arendelle, who can be seen in the background when Elsa and Anna are talking to Pabbie in the rock troll clearing. The most likely conclusion to draw here is that sometime after Pabbie relays his message to Elsa about her needing to head north, something or someone causes the pink fire to light up the forest and scare away the people of Arendelle.

08
Disney

Kristoff manages to snatch Anna away from the growing flames, which leaves Elsa and Olaf trapped in the middle of what looks like a heart-shaped ring of fire. Since the fire is a neon pinkish-purple hue, it's safe to say that it's probably not the regular degular kind of fire. Nonetheless, Elsa attempts to put the fire out with her ice, though it doesn't appear to do much. We can't help but think someone created the fire to trap them β€” maybe the beings who are causing all this ruckus in Arendelle to begin with?

Who Are These Mysterious New Characters?
Disney

Who Are These Mysterious New Characters?

The biggest mystery presented in the first trailer is the appearance of two new characters. Though they were only in the trailer for a few seconds, they're already 10 times more intriguing than our favorite Arendellians because we have no clue who they are!

The characters in question are a girl and boy who appear in the forest. The girl is seen standing surrounded by red leaves as she looks to her side, where a blond-haired boy blasts out from underneath the leaves and spins in the air. There's no telling which one of the two created the gust, but it does allude to the fact that one of these characters possibly has elemental abilities like Elsa. There's also a stark difference in their appearance: the boy is dressed in clothing that's similar to Elsa's in the first movie, meaning he's probably well off. The girl is dressed in more simple clothing, similar to Kristoff's clothes.

One theory on their identities is that the two are the children of Anna and Kristoff, mostly because of the similarities between their hair colors. However, while Anna and Kristoff look different in Frozen 2, they don't look that much older. Definitely not old enough to have kids that are at least preteens.

Disney

Another theory is that the two are elementals who will show Elsa that she isn't the only one in the world with that kind of power. It would make sense if they're the ones behind all the mysterious going ons in Arendelle, since they're in the forest that seems to be a huge focal point in the film. That would also be a perfect way to segue into the girl becoming the rumored girlfriend of Queen Elsa. Though β€” again β€” the two seem fairly young and neither could pass as old enough to date any of the main three.

Another theory on their identity is that the two are Disney's version of Gerda and Kai from the original The Snow Queen fairy tale that Frozen is based on. Obviously, elements of the story would have to change since Elsa is the Snow Queen and we know she's not evil, but it would be awesome if Disney decided to bring these characters into the fold rather than giving bits of their story to different characters (like Kristoff is bits of Kai). The brief interaction in the trailer fits the story of how Gerda and Kai were close friends and it would be cool to see how their story changes to fit Frozen's narrative. They could also just be a pair of kids who are dabbling in some dangerous magic that serves as a catalyst for all the chaos.

Disney

A particularly wild theory about the new characters' identity we can't shake is, what if the kids are people from Arendelle's past? Specifically, their late king and queen? Before you click away, just hear us out! What if we discover that Elsa's powers are genetic (as mentioned previously) and this scene is a flashback to her parents as children when they were able to play about freely. The two look enough like their parents, albeit younger, and it would explain their clothing. The young man could be their father, a royal, and their mother could have been someone of more common origin. We're just saying, there are so many possibilities, we can't rule it out!

A Blink-and-You'll-Miss-It Cameo

As our adventurers head out towards the north, they pass by Elsa's ice castle from Frozen! We doubt they'll be making a pit stop, but it is nice to know that Elsa's castle is still standing strong high above the mountains where it won't melt.

Is the Seasonal Change Natural or Magical?
Disney

Is the Seasonal Change Natural or Magical?

As we've seen, it looks like Autumn has come and everyone looks incredibly worried about it. It's obvious that everything going on has to do with the mysterious force Elsa is meant to battle, so does that mean the seasonal change is normal and everything else is falling into chaos, or is the change a symptom of the ensuing magical disaster?

Our theory is that there's something in the forest that's threatening everything in and around it. It's obviously something magical, though it could all be controlled by someone. Whatever it is, it can only be stopped with magic, specifically Elsa's magic. That's why Pabbie sends her on the quest to tap into her power and stop whatever is threatening their home.

Who Is Anna About to Cut Down?
Disney

Who Is Anna About to Cut Down?

Have we touched on how Anna has taken on a definite level in badass? Not only is the princess sporting a new do, but she's seems to have no reservations in grabbing her beau's sword and cutting down whoever is sneaking up on them. While we have no way of knowing who exactly Anna sees as a threat, it's fair to say that there's some bad blood there. We can't help but wonder if it's Hans, the disgraced prince from the Southern Isles. Of course, it could be someone else entirely, but we're putting our money on him making a duplicitous reappearance. The question is whether it's for redemption or more scandalous betrayals.

Disney

What Awaits Everyone in the Great Unknown?

At the end of the trailer, Elsa uses her magic to clear away a mystical fog and reveal four standing stones that are strikingly similar to the Celtic shrines from Pixar's Brave. Each stone bears a rune like the ones on the diamonds Elsa created before, so there's definitely a connection there. Does that mean that whatever is in the Great Unknown influenced Elsa to somehow create the runes, or was it a sign of things to come?

16
Disney

Since no one fears danger in our fivesome (yes, I'm including Sven), they all walk into the mist together and disappear. Whatever awaits them is the big mystery.
