The Mandalorian: Here's What That Last-Minute Cameo Means For the Series

Warning: spoilers for the first episode of The Mandalorian ahead!

The Mandalorian has arrived, and unsurprisingly the internet theory machine has already kicked into overdrive. But, given the final moments from the episode and the epic character it introduces — a baby Yoda! — it's understandable.

If you haven't yet watched the Disney+ Star Wars spinoff, then allow me to give you a brief rundown of the pilot: a stoic, lone bounty hunter known only as the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) is given an extremely mysterious and valuable new target in a remote desert locale from a prominent guild of bounty hunters and ultimately succeeds with the help of assassin droid IG-11 (voiced by Taika Waititi, FYI). When the droid and the Mandalorian enter the room and find a tiny, spherical cradle, the blanket is peeled back to reveal a baby Yoda — not the Yoda, mind you, but another member of that species. The droid attempts to kill the 50-year-old baby (Yodas age slow, OK?), but the Mandalorian shoots first, saving baby Yoda and opening up the rest of the series to a number of exciting possibilities.

The series takes place after 1983's Return of the Jedi and the downfall of the Empire, and this Yoda is only the third member of the species to appear in a Star Wars property: Yoda in the original franchise (and the recent The Last Jedi), and Yaddle, a female Yoda in the prequels who served as a Jedi Council member. Given all the secrecy surrounding the baby in the show, it's safe to assume that it might be the last member of the Yoda species (Yaddle presumably dies before the events of the original trilogy, and OG Yoda loses his life in Return of the Jedi).

Now, while we don't know exactly where The Mandalorian is headed from here — both the show and the character — it's clear that the story is establishing that the lead isn't as much of a cold-hearted loner as he might seem at the start of the pilot. In addition to killing a droid to save the baby, and also discussing his past as a Foundling (it's hinted that his parents were killed in a major droid attack), there's more to the Mandalorian than meets the eye . . . even if we still can't see his.

Will he hand baby Yoda over? Not likely. So, we can probably expect him to go on the run with the incredibly cute green sidekick, who just might prove to be skilled in the ways of the Force like Yoda and Yaddle. Either way, it's an exciting note to end the episode on, and people on Twitter are currently losing their minds over it all. Ahead, see some choice reactions.
